Not wanting to bruise whatever pride he had left, Melanie smiled and nodded. "Alright, you're paying. But fair warning, I'm not going to hold back."
Her comment actually pulled a laugh from Gavin. It was the first time he had smiled since she arrived. True to her word, Melanie ordered, but she deliberately only picked two of the cheapest vegetable plates. Gavin, on the other hand, ordered a mountain of premium meats. Yet, when the steaming broth arrived, he barely touched his food.
"If I were you, I'd be eating my feelings right now," Melanie remarked.
Gavin looked up. Reflected in his dull, exhausted eyes was Melanie's bright, radiant face. She seemed to glow, somehow piercing right through the suffocating gloom clouding his mind.
"...You really are incredible, Melanie," he murmured.
The sudden compliment caught her off guard. "Where is this coming from?"
"I mean it... I've always admired you," Gavin said, a bitter smile touching his lips, though his tone was dead serious. "You were the legitimate heiress of the Royce family, but your dad favored your stepmother's daughter. Then you married into the Hale family, where absolutely no one had your back. Dominic was out there playing house with another woman. You were entirely surrounded by enemies and betrayals. Yet you completely flipped the board on Dominic, your stepmother, all of them. I heard you have absolute control over the Royce Group now. It's impossible not to respect that."
