"So you think Melanie was too ruthless back then?"
Hearing Preston say that, Gabriel jumped up like he'd been electrocuted.
"No, no, no! How could I? If Melanie hadn't been so quick-witted, our family would be the ones in ruins right now, not the Bennetts."
It was rare to see Gabriel this clear-headed, and Preston let out a small sigh of relief.
"So... you just pity her?"
Gabriel looked at Preston, fell silent for a moment, and then nodded emphatically.
"I just can't stand seeing people suffer. I've always had a soft spot for women in distress!"
Preston believed him.
He had once seen Gabriel walking through a neighborhood, spot a dead stray cat, walk past it, and then turn right back around to bury the poor thing himself.
Thankfully, Preston had been there to order him to the hospital for a check-up, otherwise who knew what kind of bacteria he might have picked up.
Gabriel was simply a deeply kindhearted person.
If he wasn't...
His return to the Whitmore family wouldn't have gone nearly as smoothly.
Even though Gabriel wasn't Frederick and Marjorie's biological son.
They had raised him and loved him for years.
They had always treated him as their own.
In contrast, Preston himself didn't have much of a bond with his biological parents.
In fact, even when the Whitmores brought Preston back into the fold, they never had any intention of kicking Gabriel out.
It was Gabriel who had insisted on leaving.
He was consumed by guilt, convinced he had stolen the life of luxury that rightfully belonged to Preston for over two decades.
But precisely because Gabriel had such a pure heart, Preston was even more worried—
Gabriel might not have romantic feelings for Elara, but there was no guarantee she wouldn't manipulate his well-intentioned pity.
"Gabriel, Elara... is an incredibly vindictive woman. She might look pathetic right now, but a pathetic person often has despicable traits."
"...Yeah, I understand that in theory!"
Gabriel scratched the back of his head.
Suddenly, he held up three fingers in a pledge.
"I get it! You're worried I might do something to hurt you and Melanie just to help Elara, right? Don't worry, man. I swear on my life, I'd never bite the hand that feeds me or betray our family like that."
Before Gabriel even finished speaking, Preston stood up and ruffled his brother's hair.
