On his computer screen was the industry news about Adrian Mercer leaving Elias to go independent.
Evelyn saw the look on Melanie’s face as she left and knew she must have hit a wall with Dominic. Her mood instantly lifted.
Dominic showed Melanie’s project proposal to Evelyn.
“What do you think?”
“Well, I think…”
Evelyn stroked her chin, feigning a look of deep thought.
In truth, she didn’t understand the technical jargon in the proposal, but the strings of astronomical figures told her it was a massive project.
“A five-billion-dollar investment? Is Melanie insane?!”
“Hmm…”
Dominic was lost in thought.
Evelyn noticed that although Dominic looked troubled, he hadn’t actually rejected the project. In fact, he seemed to be considering it seriously.
Outside the office building, Melanie had just bought lunch and was taking a stroll to stretch her legs.
In a small garden, she held a thermal bag in one hand and her phone in the other, making a call.
“Elias, I’ve gone all in this time. I’ve even handed over my right-hand man for you to use…”
“Stop, stop!” Elias quickly cut in. “What am I, some kind of villain who preys on innocent men?”
“No… I just wanted to ask, are we really going to be able to develop the new anti-cancer drug this time?”
“As long as the investment comes through on this end, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
“How much investment are you looking for?”
“Five billion dollars.”
Elias was silent for a moment on the other end of the line.
Five billion in research funding was a standard amount in their industry.
But for a company of the Hale Group’s size and scale, it was an astronomical sum.
“Is your husband willing to pay?”
Melanie slowed her pace. The usually stuffy air seemed to have a sudden coolness to it.
She curved her lips into a smile.
“The stage is set… I’m not worried about him taking the bait.”
