Melanie had to hide her amusement as she listened to Dominic.
As if a company on the level of Stellaris PharmaTech would waste time setting a trap for the Hale Group.
The only person setting a trap for the Hale Group…
…was her. Melanie.
Her gaze shifted to Evelyn.
Evelyn stood with her arms crossed, a smirk that didn't reach her eyes fixed on her.
A detailed background check would take up a lot of time. So many people were vying to work with Adrian Mercer that he would surely choose another partner by then. Her project would naturally fall through.
That was undoubtedly Evelyn’s calculation.
The office was utterly silent.
All three of them stood without speaking.
After a long moment, Melanie broke into a brilliant smile.
“Evelyn is being so thoughtful. Let’s do it that way, then!”
Dominic let out a sigh of relief when he heard her words.
He had been worried she wouldn’t agree.
“See, Evelyn? I told you. Melanie is much more reasonable than you think.”
Although Evelyn hated hearing Dominic praise Melanie in front of her, she knew she had won as long as Melanie agreed to the background check on Adrian Mercer’s team.
She would deliberately have someone scrutinize them excessively. She wouldn’t rest until she had dragged this project out and killed it!
Evelyn’s eyes burned with a fiery light.
She absolutely could not let Melanie continue riding this wave of success.
She couldn’t snatch the title of Mrs. Hale, and now she was being completely overshadowed by Melanie in the workplace—
She refused to accept it!
Sensing the almost feverish energy coming off Evelyn, Melanie’s smile remained calm and composed.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll get back to work.”
“Wait,” Dominic called out, stopping her.
“Let’s have dinner together tonight. My treat…”
It wouldn’t benefit his career or his family.
One was his lawfully wedded wife, and the other was the sister who was, for all intents and purposes, his partner.
He couldn’t choose between them and hoped they could coexist peacefully.
So, tonight’s dinner would be a chance to improve their relationship.
Melanie was completely indifferent to Dominic’s thoughts and concerns.
She only agreed to go because if she didn’t, the dinner would be a cozy family meal for Dominic, Evelyn, and Lila.
But with her there, Evelyn had to act like a mere acquaintance, and Lila could only call him by his first name.
If the mistress and the illegitimate daughter were unhappy…
…she was happy.
At four-thirty in the afternoon, school let out.
Lila had been looking forward all day to going to the new buffet with her mom and dad.
But as she ran out of the school gate like a cheerful little sparrow, she saw her dad standing next to another woman.
