"Melanie, you'd better explain yourself!"
Evelyn charged forward angrily but was stopped by Dominic.
"Evelyn, calm down. Let's hear what Melanie has to say first."
Evelyn looked at Dominic, her eyes filled with disbelief.
Since when had Dominic started defending Melanie like this?
"What's wrong? Did something happen?"
Melanie feigned ignorance.
Dominic stepped forward to explain to Melanie on Evelyn's behalf.
"So that's what happened. Evelyn's old friend was rejected by Adrian Mercer, and it seems some harsh words were exchanged that upset him… But I think… that was probably Adrian's fault, and has nothing to do with you…"
Seeing Dominic try so hard to make excuses for her, Melanie found it a little amusing.
She thought that perhaps playing the part of a loving couple with her recently had given Dominic the illusion that he was truly in love with her.
"No, Adrian and I decided it together."
Melanie admitted it openly.
"See!" Evelyn immediately said to Dominic.
She hadn't expected Melanie to be so stupid as to admit it directly.
"Dominic, and you said she wasn't like that. She's clearly just selfish!" Evelyn pointed a finger in Melanie's face and yelled, "She's just afraid my old friend will join the project and usurp her authority! She's not thinking about what's good for the company; she just wants to monopolize all the benefits of this project for herself!"
Evelyn's shouting at the company entrance attracted a lot of sideways glances.
Dominic was embarrassed and immediately pulled Evelyn aside.
Melanie followed them and saw the conflicted expression on Dominic's face.
"Melanie, I believe Evelyn has misunderstood you. You're not that kind of person…"
"I can't take chances with a project that is of critical importance to our company. So, after careful consideration with Adrian Mercer, we decided not to hire Riley."
Dominic was stunned by Melanie's calm, well-reasoned words.
His gaze toward Melanie was filled with admiration and approval.
Evelyn's mouth gaped open. She moved her lips but couldn't manage a single word to refute Melanie.
"See, Evelyn? I told you that you misunderstood Melanie! She really is thinking wholeheartedly about the company."
"Dominic…"
"I think what Melanie said makes perfect sense. You should stop being unreasonable."
"I'm being unreasonable?!"
Evelyn's eyes were red as she glared at Dominic, then she stood up angrily and left.
"Aren't you going to go after her?"
