"Of course, I'm laughing at your dear colleague, Riley. He takes himself way too seriously!"
Melanie's words were aimed at Riley, but Evelyn's intuition told her the laugh was meant for her.
Seeing that Evelyn was about to retort, Melanie held up a hand, stopping her from saying more.
Then, she turned to look at Dominic.
The moment their eyes met, Dominic instinctively held his breath.
In their four years of marriage, he had rarely seen such a look of absolute confidence in Melanie's eyes.
Or perhaps… he simply hadn't paid much attention to Melanie in the first place.
"Dominic, since I'm the head of the new anti-cancer drug project, can you give me full authority to handle this matter?"
"Full authority?" Evelyn jumped in before Dominic could speak. "And if things go wrong, will you take responsibility?"
"Of course, I will," Melanie said without hesitation.
"Melanie, don't be so rash…" Dominic suddenly felt a deep sense of unease. He was afraid this would backfire on her.
He didn't understand why he felt this sense of panic. It was as if… he was terrified she would leave his company.
He was terrified she would leave him.
"If I don't handle this properly, I'll resign and take full responsibility."
*No!* Dominic rejected the idea in his mind, but he didn't say it out loud. He was afraid of how Evelyn would react.
Seeing that neither Dominic nor Evelyn said anything, Melanie took their silence as agreement.
After Melanie left the conference room, Evelyn shot a sideways glance at Dominic. "What, you can't bear to see her go?"
"Daddy…"
"Just do your homework and be quiet."
The moment the words were out, Dominic regretted snapping at Lila. But they were out, and he couldn't take them back.
Large teardrops splattered onto her worksheet. The more Lila tried to hold back her tears, the more they streamed down her face like a broken dam.
Seeing Lila cry only made the already frustrated Dominic even more agitated. He wasn't in the mood to comfort her, so he got up, left her room, and went to the living room to drink alone.
It was almost ten o'clock at night, and Evelyn still wasn't back.
Dominic couldn't help but wonder, how long could a dinner with Riley possibly take? As Lila's mother, she was being rather irresponsible.
In a daze, a thought suddenly crossed his mind: What if Melanie were here? Would she help him take care of Lila? Would she be… a better mother than Evelyn?
