When Dominic returned to Northwell Haven Medical Center with Evelyn, Lila had already been discharged.
The two walking toward them were hand-in-hand, looking for all the world like a doting mother and a devoted daughter—
At least, that’s how it looked to Dominic.
Melanie wasn’t surprised to see Dominic standing beside Evelyn, nor did she show a hint of jealousy. Instead, she offered a gentle smile.
“Evelyn, I’m so glad you’re all right.”
“You were hoping something would happen to me?”
Evelyn’s retort was so sharp and pointed that Dominic couldn’t help but clear his throat.
“My wife Melanie is just concerned about you.”
Hearing Dominic emphasize the title “wife,” Evelyn bit her lower lip hard.
That’s right. Melanie was Dominic’s wife, and she was Dominic’s sister.
Therefore, Melanie would always be her brother’s wife.
Forever a rank above her!
“That’s right, Mommy. Don’t talk to Aunt Melanie like that. She even bought me a lollipop!”
Lila turned her head to look at Melanie and gave her a sweet smile.
Although Lila was more mature and calculating than other children her age, she was still just a child at heart.
When she had woken up, the only person she saw sitting by her bedside was Melanie.
Her father and her mother were nowhere to be found.
The vulnerability she felt after recovering from a serious illness made Lila suddenly feel deeply dependent on and grateful for Melanie.
As she let go of Melanie’s hand to take Evelyn’s, Lila seemed reluctant to part.
“Hmph, you think she’s being nice to you just because she bought you a lollipop?”
Evelyn pulled Lila to her side.
“Didn’t Mommy tell you that eating too much sugar will give you cavities, and the toothache will be unbearable?”
Lila froze.
“Even if you don’t remember what Mommy said, you should remember what your kindergarten teachers told you, right? So, do you still think your aunt is nice? She’s clearly trying to harm you!”
Evelyn spoke with such conviction that Lila was momentarily lost in confusion.
She looked at Evelyn, then at Melanie, and finally cast a pleading glance at Dominic.
“Melanie was just trying to cheer Lila up. She meant no harm, Evelyn. You don’t have to be so harsh.”
Just as Dominic was defending Melanie, Melanie took a wrapper out of her handbag.
“I bought Lila a tooth-friendly lollipop. I deliberately kept the wrapper so there wouldn’t be any misunderstanding.”
