"So, what you're saying is, you're just after the Whitmore family's fortune, then?"
Marjorie purposefully hardened her expression.
Instead, she watched Melanie playfully point to her own face.
"Honestly speaking, I'm much more interested in Preston's handsome face than his bank account."
Completely caught off guard by Melanie's blatant superficiality, Marjorie had to fight back a laugh.
Well, at least the girl is honest!
After all, she was quite fond of her son's strikingly handsome face as well.
"If I were only in this for the money, I'd be better off trying to seduce the boss of Stellaris PharmaTech, Mr. Whitmore!"
Hearing Melanie casually mutter that sentence, Marjorie froze.
"I know Preston comes from a wealthy family, but I'm not exactly destitute either. I know my own worth. Aside from Stellaris PharmaTech, I don't consider marrying into any of the other elite families in Averin to be punching above my weight."
Melanie's confident declaration left Marjorie thoroughly bewildered.
Why did it sound like Melanie had absolutely zero clue that Preston was the boss of Stellaris PharmaTech?
Had her son really spent all this time chasing after the girl without ever revealing his true identity?
Marjorie tilted her head, fascinated.
Was he seriously pulling this off purely on his looks?
"So, if you have any other concerns about me, ma'am, please lay them all on the table!"
Melanie's poised, genuine, and straightforward demeanor left Marjorie at a rare loss for words.
She was starting to understand why Preston was so obsessed with this girl.
Melanie was incredibly emotionally stable.
She wasn't arrogantly full of herself, yet she refused to let anyone tear her down.
And there was a fierce resilience buried deep in her bones.
"The main reason I came to see you today is... because you got Preston hurt."
Marjorie brought the incident up directly, wanting to see how Melanie would defend herself.
The truth was, she had already looked into the matter.
Melanie had never asked Preston to fly a helicopter out to MD to accompany her.
Preston had done that entirely of his own volition.
Ultimately, the blame couldn't fairly be placed on Melanie's shoulders.
However, Marjorie noticed Melanie's expression grow instantly solemn.
"Forgive my intrusion, but... have you been taking any traditional medicine lately?"
Marjorie blinked in surprise.
"How did you know? I've been getting headaches lately, and I didn't want to rely on painkillers, so I had a veteran physician write me a prescription."
"If you trust me, please stop taking that medication. It won't cure your headaches, and it's actively damaging your body."
Melanie advised bluntly.
Marjorie took the warning with a grain of salt.
Even if Melanie had studied pharmacology in the past, she was just an amateur.
Was she really capable of diagnosing and prescribing medication?
Yet, there was something so fiercely compelling in Melanie's gaze that made her instinctively want to believe her.
"Alright, I'll stop taking it when I get home."
Marjorie agreed, and the two women walked out of the café side by side.
"Oh, right. If you really want to dive deep into the pharmaceutical field, I highly recommend checking out a user on the medical forums named Schrödinger's Pill."
Marjorie chatted casually, completely missing the shocked expression that suddenly overtook Melanie's face.
"Their pharmacological knowledge is off the charts. They're an absolute genius, honestly my idol."
