After registering the name and ID, Evelyn slipped inside the facility. Naturally, the ID she used was fake, but a simple nursing home tour didn't require high-level security clearance.
Following the tour group, Evelyn darted her eyes around the halls. The person she was hunting for was Everett.
Ever since spotting him in the park across from her rundown apartment, she had been a nervous wreck.
The fact that he was alive was a fatal blow, but discovering he was with Melanie was an absolute nightmare. She had wasted so much money!
Evelyn cursed inwardly. Back then, she had casually posted on an obscure forum asking how to hire a hitman. The next day, a stranger reached out. He had tracked her IP address and offered to solve her problem—for the right price.
She only found out later that he was a low-level operative for a militant faction in MD looking to traffic free labor out of Averin.
But she had explicitly told him she wanted Everett dead! Leaving loose ends was a rookie mistake.
Evelyn subtly detached herself from the tour group, creeping down the corridors to peek into rooms one by one. She had hired a private investigator who confirmed Everett frequented this facility.
After about half an hour of sneaking around, a familiar silhouette caught her eye.
It was Everett!
Evelyn hid behind the door frame, watching him from the shadows. He was playing with toys on the floor, acting exactly like a toddler.
Back at the park, she had been too terrified to look closely. Now, it was obvious his mind had regressed.
Evelyn had no idea why the militant hadn't finished the job, especially after she had paid him multiple times to handle the aftermath. Nor did she know how Melanie had managed to find him and bring him back.
But one thing was crystal clear: Everett could not be allowed to live.
Philip nodded and left to make the call. He returned shortly after. "Mr. Whitmore, the staff said Ms. Royce had already provided them with a photo of Evelyn in advance. She instructed them to alert her the second Evelyn set foot on the premises."
Hearing Philip's report, a faint, imperceptible smirk graced Preston's lips.
Melanie was in an excellent mood today. The bait she cast had worked flawlessly, reeling in the exact fish she was targeting. Her good spirits even made her plow through her work at record speed.
But when she stepped out of her office and headed to the breakroom for coffee, she ran into the absolute last person she wanted to see—Dominic.
Melanie knew he had been released. It wasn't a major criminal charge, so they couldn't hold him for long.
She just hadn't expected him to come rushing back to the office the second he was free. Did he actually enjoy working that much?
