"What's the point of admitting it now? I wasted four years of my life on a bastard, and the man I thought was my friend sacrificed himself to hide his illegitimate daughter! I had no idea you were such a saint, Everett! A regular martyr!"
Melanie shot back, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
But the truth was, she knew she couldn't dump all the blame on him.
It was her own fault for being blind to Dominic and Evelyn's affair.
Her mind understood that, but her emotions were spiraling completely out of control.
"I really want to know what kind of payoff Dominic promised you to make you so eager to marry her."
Faced with her blistering accusations, Everett opened his mouth to speak.
But the words died in his throat.
Memories flashed before his eyes like a vintage film reel, dragging him back four years.
It was a violently stormy night.
In a dark alley behind The Velvet Orchid, Everett had thrown a brutal punch at Dominic.
"What the hell is going on with you and your adopted sister? How did you knock her up? Dominic, how can you do this to Melanie?!"
Dominic wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, completely unfazed by Everett's explosive rage.
"Drop the righteous act, Everett. Do you honestly think I don't know?"
Dominic wiped the rain from his face and pointed a sharp finger straight at Everett.
"You're in love with Melanie! You've been lusting after my fiancée for a long time, haven't you?!"
That single accusation struck Everett entirely speechless.
Dominic spat out a curse, relentless in his attack.
"You play the nice, quiet guy, but you're the one betraying your best friend, aren't you?"
"If you're going to be a man, own up to it. Denying it just makes you look pathetic!"
Dominic stepped under an awning to escape the downpour, and like a man in a trance, Everett followed.
"Look, she's gorgeous and comes from a wealthy family. It's completely normal that you're into her. But you need a reality check. My family and hers go way back. Her dad is only going to accept me as his son-in-law."
Every casual, arrogant word out of Dominic's mouth was a knife twisting in Everett's gut.
"I'll level with you. Evelyn and I are truly in love, but my parents will never let me marry her. Marrying Melanie is a smart business move, it's what everyone expects, and besides... she loves me."
"If you really care about her, you'll help me bury this. That way she won't get hurt. I swear to you, once we're married, I'll treat her like a queen. I'll never mistreat her."
Dominic raised three fingers, making a solemn vow.
The deep crease between Everett's brows remained unyielding.
"Then what about the baby Evelyn is carrying? Are you going to make her get rid of it?"
