As soon as Everett asked the question, Dominic lowered his head, looking deeply conflicted.
"She refuses to do it."
Silence hung heavy in the air.
"She saved my life, and she's my sister in name. I can't force her to have an abortion."
"So you're keeping it? You're keeping your illegitimate kid with her?!"
Everett demanded, his voice thick with disbelief.
Dominic's face twisted into an expression of utter helplessness.
"I'm out of options here!" he exclaimed, suddenly grabbing Everett's hand.
"Buddy, you have to help me."
"What?"
Everett couldn't process what he was hearing.
Help him?
What could he possibly do?
"Why don't you marry her?"
It hit Everett like a freight train, leaving him completely stunned.
"You're my best friend. I'm begging you..."
Dominic gripped his shoulders tight.
"I really have no other choice. This whole thing has spiraled completely out of control. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place."
Dominic's expression was a perfect mask of torment and desperation.
"I can't make her get rid of the baby, and I can't back out of marrying Melanie."
"But as she starts showing, people are going to ask questions. If Melanie finds out... she loves me so much, it would absolutely destroy her!"
"The only way out is for you to step up and take Evelyn. That gives her a solid cover, nobody questions the baby's paternity, and Melanie never has to suffer."
"Everett, you love Melanie, don't you? But she doesn't love you, she loves me. So you should protect her happiness. If you do this for me, she'll never be hurt by Evelyn or the baby once we're married."
Every word out of Dominic's mouth sounded completely twisted to Everett.
He looked at Melanie, whose anger still burned bright, and apologized once more.
It was the only thing left he could say.
Back then, he truly believed his sacrifice was securing her happily ever after.
But now he knew the truth.
She had divorced Dominic.
She didn't love him anymore.
And even though she no longer loved Dominic...
She would never love him either.
Seeing him bury his face in his hands in absolute misery, she let out a heavy sigh, suddenly unsure if she should just walk out and leave him be.
Just then, a knock echoed through the room.
They both turned toward the door as it cracked open, revealing a man's deep, magnetic voice.
"Is it a bad time to come in?"
