By the time Melanie finally returned to her penthouse at Rosevale Heights, it was quite late.
The apartment was completely dark, and a wave of disappointment hit her. Preston still wasn't home.
Living with him had made her realize just how punishing his schedule at Stellaris actually was. She genuinely wondered if he even took time to sleep.
Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, she twisted the cap off and pulled out her phone to text Everett that she made it back safely.
She had expected a quick goodnight, but Everett kept the conversation going, sending her rapid-fire links to new apartment listings and asking for her opinion.
Honestly, she didn't have much advice to give.
She wasn't the one signing the lease.
But he was being so earnest, she felt bad ignoring him.
Just as she was typing out a reply, a hand suddenly reached over her shoulder and snatched the phone right out of her grasp.
Melanie gasped, jolting in surprise. The water bottle jerked, splashing cold water down her neck and across her chest.
She spun around furiously, only to freeze when she met Preston's dark, intensely amused eyes.
He wasn't in his usual tailored suits. He was dressed in a set of deep, dark silk pajamas.
The luxurious fabric draped flawlessly over his broad shoulders, giving off an intoxicatingly dangerous, seductive energy.
"You're home?"
"Mhm," Preston nodded.
"Then why are all the lights off? I thought you were still at the office."
"I wanted to give you a surprise."
"More like a heart attack," Melanie muttered, holding out her hand. "Give me back my phone."
Preston didn't immediately hand it over. Instead, his gaze dropped to the glowing screen, his eyes locking onto the chat log with Everett's name plastered at the top.
"You're messaging Everett Kingsley..."
Hearing the dark, possessive drawl in his voice, Melanie playfully fanned the air in front of her face.
"Wow, what is that smell? Smells like someone's brutally jealous."
Preston let out a low chuckle, finally pressing the phone back into her palm.
"I suspect you're trying to seduce me," Preston murmured, his voice dropping an octave, "but I don't have hard evidence yet."
Melanie's breath hitched. She looked up and saw the raw devotion in his eyes shifting into something feral and heated.
Suddenly, he dipped his head. Moving in close to her collarbone, his warm, damp tongue traced a searing path over her luminous skin, catching a stray drop of water.
"Now," he whispered against her pulse point. "This is how you seduce someone."
"You..."
Melanie's face flushed a brilliant shade of crimson.
The skin where he had tasted her tingled violently, burning with a frantic, electric heat.
So much for the cold, untouchable billionaire act.
How was he so damn good at this...
Melanie practically needed to fan herself, taking shallow breaths as she desperately tried to cool her racing body.
They had slept together countless times, yet somehow, he could still make her blush like a teenager with a single touch.
