Seeing Melanie fanning herself to cool down, Preston reached over, waving a hand beside her as if trying to help.
To Melanie, though, it felt like he was teasing her. She swatted away his white-gloved hand.
"Save the charm," she said. "Tell me first—how did you know I went house-hunting with Everett today?"
"It was our Vice President..." Preston answered honestly.
"Gabriel?" The image of Gabriel Whitmore having dinner with Aria immediately flashed in Melanie's mind. "Ha! He's pretty gossipy for an executive." She shrugged. "I did see him. He was with Aria, of all people!"
Hearing the accusatory tone in her voice, Preston couldn't help but find the situation highly amusing.
Melanie was complaining to him about Gabriel, while Gabriel had just complained to him about Melanie.
In Gabriel's eyes, Melanie had no business being alone with Everett. And in Melanie's eyes, Gabriel had no business dining alone with Aria.
Still, she kept her criticisms brief.
Preston knew exactly why. Melanie had no idea about his true connection to Gabriel, assuming they were just a standard boss and employee.
Because of her natural consideration for him, she held her tongue, not wanting to stress out a regular employee over upper-management drama he couldn't control. It was just another example of Melanie's innate thoughtfulness.
"Honey, are you worried Mr. Whitmore might leak something to Aria?" Preston asked.
Melanie went silent for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, I'm a little worried."
If Gabriel told Aria that Melanie had deliberately leaked the fake news about the failed improvement proposal just to bait her, her entire plan would go up in smoke.
"You really don't trust him?"
"Mr. Whitmore told me that Aria asked to meet him at the Grand Sovereign Hotel at ten o'clock tomorrow night," Preston revealed.
Well, she moves fast, Melanie thought.
"Since he told you about it, does that mean he's not going?" she asked.
To her surprise, Preston shook his head.
"No... he said he'll be there right on time."
Melanie's eyes widened slightly, a hint of doubt and reflection flashing in her gaze.
His tone dropped the casual banter, growing serious. "So he told me to ask you... if you want to come along?"
