If he tried to control her like that, she would eventually reach her breaking point and run away from him.
The mere thought sent a spike of terror through his chest, and he pulled her into a tight embrace.
Winter had set in, and the hospital corridors felt drafty and grim, almost colder than the streets outside.
But wrapped in Preston's arms, a profound, intoxicating warmth rushed through her veins, heating her from the inside out.
She involuntarily relaxed against his chest, leaning into his strength, feeling entirely cherished.
However, their moment of intimacy was cut short as the door to the hospital room opened. Though Preston didn't want to let her go, he sensed her sudden panic and gracefully stepped back.
The doctors filed out of the room.
"Ms. Royce, the test results are mostly in. Your father is fine. It was a combination of severe exhaustion, extreme stress, minor lacunar infarction, and high cholesterol. He just needs to manage his health more carefully moving forward."
After listening to the doctor's instructions, Melanie led Preston into the room.
Nathaniel was awake, though he looked visibly drained.
He peered past Melanie and Preston, as if searching for something, a flash of disappointment crossing his eyes.
"It's just the two of you?"
Nathaniel asked, his voice raspy.
Melanie shrugged.
"Your new wife, your precious second daughter, a dozen random relatives, and the company executives were all here at first. But when you took too long to wake up, they realized they had no audience for their act of loyalty and devotion, so they all bailed."
The moment she spoke, the words dripped with venom.
She hadn't planned on antagonizing him.
But she couldn't help herself.
Especially after realizing the first people he wanted to see weren't his biological daughter, but his homewrecking wife and her spawn.
Nathaniel stared at her, his gaze hardening.
"He cares about you a hell of a lot more than your new wife and daughter do. I don't see why you had to kick him out to talk to me."
Hearing her defend Preston so fiercely made Nathaniel huff in annoyance.
"You weren't this blind when you married Dominic!"
"Can we not talk about that bastard? You picked him. I picked Preston!"
Melanie shot back, her voice rising.
Sensing another explosive argument brewing, Nathaniel let out a long breath.
"I didn't ask you to stay behind to fight with you."
"Then why am I here?"
Melanie demanded, blunt and defensive.
