She Left She Thrived She’s Worth Billions novel Chapter 563

"I want to know... what do your boyfriend's parents do for a living?"

Melanie blinked.

This was the very first time Nathaniel had proactively asked about Preston's background.

She hesitated, the silence stretching out awkwardly before she finally answered.

"I... don't really know."

Her voice was quiet, but in the sterile stillness of the hospital room, it echoed like a gunshot.

"Excuse me?!"

Nathaniel's face instantly twisted in fury, his voice echoing off the walls.

"You've been dating this man for this long, and you have no idea what his family does?!"

"I never asked..."

"And he never bothered to volunteer the information? What the hell do you two even talk about? What if his family is a bunch of criminals? Is that the kind of man you're going to tie yourself to?!"

"Dad!"

Melanie snapped, cutting him off.

"Preston's family isn't like that... I've met his mother. She's incredibly elegant and clearly comes from a powerful, old-money background."

"And what exactly does she do?"

"Well..."

Melanie rubbed the back of her head, muttering under her breath.

"I don't know..."

Nathaniel looked ready to spontaneously combust. He pointed a trembling finger right at her face.

"He knows everything about you, but you know absolutely nothing about him! What's the point of this relationship? Break up with him immediately!"

Melanie had no idea why he was blowing a gasket. She grabbed a bottle of water off the nightstand and angrily chugged half of it.

In Nathaniel's experience, men who flaunted unimaginable wealth but refused to discuss their origins usually had dirty money.

In other words, Preston's background was shady.

"Either you break up with him right now, or the second I'm discharged, he brings his parents to dinner... My daughter is not dating a man with a shady background!"

Hearing that, it finally clicked in Melanie's brain.

He was actually considering Preston as son-in-law material. That was why he was interrogating her.

"Seriously, you could have just led with that!" Melanie muttered, rolling her eyes.

Nathaniel caught the attitude and glared at her.

"Lead with what?! I have nothing to say to a daughter who is this blind in love!"

Taking the scolding, Melanie didn't argue this time. She just dropped her head and trudged out of the room.

Outside, Preston was leaning against the cold wall of the corridor, looking like a perfectly sculpted statue.
