"For decades, Gregory has been systematically planting false memories in your head. He forced you to repeatedly visualize a scenario that never actually happened. The end result is a completely fabricated memory."
Having delivered the psychological execution, Preston broke his intense gaze and looked at Melanie.
The moment their eyes met, the glacial coldness melted into absolute adoration.
"Right, honey?"
Although Preston had totally stolen her thunder, Melanie wasn't mad. If anything, she was thrilled her boyfriend was this brilliant.
"Exactly... The truth is, aside from Gregory's self-serving narrative, my father's blank memory proves absolutely nothing..."
"So what?!" Gregory roared, cutting her off in a panic.
"Who else was there to prove otherwise?! Me and your dad are the only ones left! What, are you going to ask Walter? He's dead!"
"What if he isn't?"
Melanie's calm, flat delivery hit the room like a bomb.
Gregory's knees literally gave out. If Dominic hadn't been standing right next to him to catch him, he would have collapsed onto the floor.
"Melanie, what did you just say?!"
For the first time, Everett shoved past everyone and rushed right up to her.
He grabbed her arms, his knuckles turning white, his eyes wide with violent desperation.
Preston glared at Everett's hands, a flash of severe displeasure in his eyes.
But he didn't intervene.
This was not the time for jealousy.
"Melanie... tell me right now. My father... what do you mean he isn't dead?!"
Everett's voice shattered.
A spark of impossible hope flared in his chest.
But reality quickly stamped it out.
No...
That's impossible.
Unfazed, Melanie smoothly pulled out her phone and tapped play on a video.
"You really are going to fight this to the bitter end, aren't you?"
She turned the screen around to face him.
"Take a good look. Who is this?"
The video showed what looked like a high-end medical facility.
Doctors and nurses in scrubs moved efficiently in the background.
Lying in the hospital bed was a frail, elderly man.
But he was awake. His eyes were open.
And his face was unmistakable.
Nathaniel, watching from the hospital bed, launched himself off the mattress.
"Walter?!"
