Nathaniel lunged forward to get a closer look at the screen, but Melanie smoothly pulled the phone away.
"Gregory, you can't hide a lie forever... Walter didn't die. He's currently recovering at the Carter Group Sanatorium in Xavorn. He'll be discharged very soon..."
With every calm word Melanie spoke, cold sweat poured down Gregory's forehead.
"No... that's impossible. It's impossible..."
Gregory violently shook his head, refusing to accept the reality staring him in the face.
But Melanie could read him perfectly. His mouth was in denial, but his absolute terror proved he believed her.
He was completely unraveling.
"The man who risked his life to save my father wasn't you. It was Walter!"
"What did you just say?!" Nathaniel gasped in sheer horror.
The rest of the room stood paralyzed in shock.
Only Preston remained completely unfazed.
And Gregory, the architect of the lie, looked like he was about to vomit.
"What else is there to say, Gregory? You've been lying to my father—lying to all of us—for decades! You're nothing but a pathetic fraud!"
Pointed at and berated by Melanie, Gregory suddenly snapped, violently kicking a storage bin across the room.
Preston instantly pulled Melanie into his chest.
Surrounded by Preston's solid warmth, Melanie felt entirely safe.
"I'm fine..." she smiled up at him.
By now, Everett's eyes were bloodshot, his voice choking on tears.
"So... it was my father who saved you both? And you stole the credit?"
Everett stared at the monstrously selfish man in front of him, his eyes blown wide with disbelief.
Nathaniel was shaking so violently he could barely stand.
He stared at Gregory, absolutely horrified that this cold-blooded, narcissistic poison was spilling from the mouth of a man he had trusted for decades.
"Walter was just trying to show off... and look at him now, he didn't even die!" Gregory scoffed, rolling his eyes at Everett.
"Gregory!"
Hearing Nathaniel's feral roar, Gregory turned just in time to see Nathaniel charging at him.
"You lied to me for decades! I worshipped you as my savior!"
Nathaniel grabbed Gregory by the collar. Gregory just laughed in his face.
"Because you wanted to! You were stupid enough to believe me! Besides, everyone thought he was dead anyway—why let a perfectly good hero narrative go to waste?!"
