Noticing the subtle shift in Melanie's expression the moment she saw the box, Everett quickly explained.
"It's nothing expensive. But if you don't take it, I'll just feel like you're still mad at me..."
"Why would I be mad at you? I'm just glad you're not mad at me."
Melanie said, reaching out her hand.
"Let me see what it is first!"
She took the box and opened it, revealing a plush bunny keychain.
She blinked in surprise, while Everett rubbed the back of his neck, an awkward smile on his face.
"Is it... too childish?"
"No, it's actually really cute."
Melanie lifted the bunny keychain out of the box.
Even though it was just a plush toy keychain, the craftsmanship was exquisite. The pink bow tied around the bunny's neck was made from different textured fabrics, giving it a very sweet, layered look.
"I'm sorry. I don't have much money right now, so I couldn't buy you anything too expensive."
He ducked his head low as he spoke.
"If you had bought something expensive, I wouldn't have accepted it... This is perfect. I really love it."
Melanie smiled at him and clipped the bunny keychain onto the strap of her purse.
Everett smiled back, though it still looked a bit strained.
On one hand, he was thrilled that she had accepted his peace offering.
On the other hand, he felt his gift was painfully cheap.
He knew her bag was an incredibly expensive Hermès, and more than likely, Preston had bought it for her.
On the surface, Preston was just a regular employee at Stellaris PharmaTech.
But judging by his tailored clothes and how freely he spent money, it was blatantly obvious he came from a wealthy background. He had to be a trust fund kid at the very least.
It was another keychain.
It looked almost identical to the one he had given Melanie—a plush bunny.
The only difference was that the bow on his bunny's neck was blue.
When he had been picking out a gift for her, the clerk at the boutique had recommended it, saying it was their best-selling item.
A matching couple's set.
Everett knew it was a cowardly move not to tell Melanie it was a couple's keychain.
But he figured that secretly clipping it onto his own bag wouldn't hurt anyone.
It was just a tiny bit of psychological comfort for himself.
With that thought, he fastened the keychain onto his bag.
Back at the Royce Group, Melanie moved at lightning speed, seizing the perfect window to acquire the Hale Group.
