Melanie Royce looked at Shawn Sterling, their intersecting gazes feeling like a silent battle of wills.
If, at the very beginning, Melanie had merely considered Shawn to be a wealthy playboy who threw money around to hunt for romance—and swung both ways.
Then right now, she had to wonder if they had some kind of history or bad blood.
Logically speaking, Shawn had deliberately sent priceless jewelry straight to the Stellaris PharmaTech celebration banquet and threatened her into accepting it.
It certainly seemed like he was trying to pursue her.
At least monetarily, he had invested heavily.
However...
Meeting Shawn's eyes in this moment, Melanie couldn't detect a single ounce of affection in his gaze.
In other words, even if he chose to smother her with money to pursue her, it absolutely wasn't because he had any real feelings for her.
"Mr. Sterling, you seem perfectly fine. Your heart shouldn't have taken any damage," she said coldly.
Melanie's sharp retort actually made Shawn laugh.
He stood up, adjusted his white casual suit, and then turned to shoot his thugs a look, signaling them to leave.
The goons filed out of Daphne Morrell's club one by one, and Daphne secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Shawn took his time walking out. As he brushed past Preston Whitmore, he heard Preston ask softly,
"You aren't from Averin."
Shawn glanced at Preston and flashed a deliberate grin.
"I'm registering my residency tomorrow."
With that, he meant to keep walking, but Preston called out to him again.
"Hold on."
Shawn paused as Preston held a hand out toward him.
"Phone."
The single, crisp word wasn't a command.
But it carried more weight than one.
Melanie and Daphne stood together, their eyes darting to Preston in unison.
