"I only wanted to gain some work experience, and since Preston was short an assistant, it seemed like a good fit," Elara said softly. "But since he is so opposed to the idea, I can easily take a position in another department. That way, everyone is happy."
Hearing this, Marjorie immediately grasped Elara's hands.
"Elara, you are far too understanding. Your parents must be so proud to have a daughter like you."
Basking in the lavish praise, Elara lowered her head in feigned modesty.
"You should learn a thing or two from her, Preston," Marjorie snapped, slapping her son's shoulder in sheer frustration. "A little compromise goes a long way."
Ultimately, Elara was appointed as the Administrative Director of Stellaris PharmaTech.
The position was hastily created just for her.
This time, Preston offered no objections. He simply turned and left his own office in silence.
Marjorie hurried out after him.
Gabriel knew his mother was rushing to smooth things over with Preston.
That left him alone with Elara in the office.
"What exactly is your game?" Gabriel demanded, not bothering to hide his hostility.
Elara's expression turned frigid.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Drop the innocent act! You weaseled your way into our company just to get close to Preston!" Gabriel snapped without hesitation.
"Look, not every man on earth is dead. With your family's wealth, it's not like you're desperate to marry him, are you?"
"Yes, Preston is gorgeous, but you're rich too. Go find some boy toy if you're bored! Why are you so hell-bent on stealing someone else's boyfriend? Preston and Melanie are perfect for each other. Stop trying to drive a wedge between them!"
Elara's face flushed with fury, her chest tightening with an overwhelming urge to scream.
She would have almost preferred Preston to hurl those insults at her.
