Marjorie Kent didn't want to fight with Preston. But as his mother, she felt it was completely normal to worry about her son being bewitched by a woman. Today, he sent his most trusted assistant to Melanie's side. Tomorrow, he might just hand the entirety of Stellaris PharmaTech over to her. In another era, a woman like that would have been called a kingdom-destroying siren.
Initially, keeping Preston's feelings in mind—and considering her own impression of Melanie wasn't terribly negative—Marjorie had compromised. But then Preston flatly rejected her decision to have Elara Bennett take over as his assistant.
They rarely fought in the past. Yet ever since Preston and Melanie became serious, he had become increasingly deaf to her advice. Marjorie couldn't help but wonder if Melanie was pulling the strings behind the scenes, deliberately driving a wedge between mother and son.
Looking at Marjorie's furious expression, Preston let out a heavy sigh. "I had my own reasons for reassigning Philip to Melanie. But why are you so insistent on Elara becoming my assistant? Is this some sort of training exercise so she can be a competent secretary when she goes back to the Bennett family?"
"I..." Marjorie was left speechless.
Truthfully, the assistant position had been Elara's own request. During a casual chat, Marjorie had slipped up and mentioned that Preston sent Philip to act as Melanie's bodyguard. Elara immediately offered to step into the vacancy. Marjorie thought it was a brilliant idea; it filled the role with someone whose background they trusted completely.
She never expected Preston to explode over it.
"If you insist on forcing Elara into the role of my special assistant, then I'll resign as CEO," Preston said coldly.
He turned on his heel, ready to walk out.
"Stop right there!" Marjorie grabbed his arm. "Why are you being so stubborn?"
It was just an assistant position. Marjorie didn't see the harm.
Unless... was Preston worried Melanie would get jealous?
The thought only fueled Marjorie's anger. How could the proud heir of the Whitmore family allow himself to be so thoroughly controlled by a woman?
Gabriel Whitmore couldn't stand on the sidelines any longer.
"Don't do anything crazy, Preston! Stellaris can't function without you, and I definitely can't hold the fort alone!" he said anxiously, shooting a vicious glare at Elara.
If she hadn't come to Averin, this screaming match would never have happened.
