"Everyone in this company knows that due to the highly confidential nature of our work, the R&D Department has independent security systems for every office, including this meeting room," Regina stated, staring Elara down. She stopped just short of saying what she really meant: Your department doesn't do anything important enough to warrant this room.
Melanie caught the underlying insult perfectly. She was sure Elara had caught it, too.
Maybe Regina genuinely didn't understand why Elara was targeting this specific room, but Melanie knew exactly what was going on. This wasn't about Regina. It was about her.
Since Elara was now a Stellaris executive, she undoubtedly knew about the new joint project with the Royce Group. And she definitely knew Melanie was the lead on it.
Logically, an ex-fiancée should know when to bow out, especially when the man in question was happily married to someone else. But Elara's petty stunts proved she was still desperately clinging to the past.
"I'm perfectly aware that the R&D meeting rooms are the most secure in the building, Regina. That is precisely why we need it," Elara said dismissively.
Regina stared at her, utterly baffled. "What kind of top-secret operation is the Administrative Department running?"
"We need to finalize the procurement and design strategies for this year's Summer Solstice Festival Seasonal Gala Hampers."
"Excuse me?!" Regina's jaw practically hit the floor.
Elara held Regina's gaze, her eyes brimming with sheer contempt. The implication was crystal clear: she was equating the R&D Department's cutting-edge scientific research with putting together corporate gift baskets for a holiday. She was mocking their work, implying it was trivial.
"You are crossing a line, Elara!" Regina snapped.
"That's Manager Bennett to you, Regina," Elara replied, adopting a mock-professional tone. "Now, as you can see, this room is currently occupied by my staff. We have a meeting to conduct. I'll have to ask the two of you to leave immediately."
