His burns were still raw. Being caught in a torrential downpour—let alone standing outside in the freezing wind—was incredibly dangerous.
Before she could step back, Preston grabbed her wrist. He dragged her out of the onslaught, pulling her under the wide awning of the main entrance.
The rain hammered against the metal roof above them in a frantic, relentless rhythm.
They stood inches apart, his grip still securely locked around her wrist.
He stared down at her. Her face was etched with fury, but no matter how hard she tried to mask it, the instinctive jacket-toss gave her away. She still cared about him.
"Please, just give me a chance to explain?" he pleaded softly.
"No. I don't want to hear it," she snapped, cutting him off cold.
The torment deepened on his handsome, pale face.
Melanie couldn't bear to look at him looking like that.
"Get back inside and lie down on that bed right now!" she commanded, her voice lashing like a whip.
"No."
He refused her just as swiftly.
"If you won't listen to me, I'll stand here until my back gets infected."
"Fine!" She let out a dark, cynical laugh.
"If your back gets infected because of this, I will never look at you again. I will walk away and pretend you don't exist for the rest of my life!"
The absolute finality in her threat shattered his stubbornness.
He knew she wasn't bluffing.
She wasn't joking around.
If he stayed out here, worsened his injuries, and risked his life just to prove a point, she really would cut him out forever.
"Honey..."
"Get inside!"
Defeated by her roar, Preston lowered his head. His fists were clenched so tightly by his sides that the seams of his gown threatened to rip.
Finally, he listened to her and trudged back to his room.
Only when his broad, defeated silhouette completely vanished from sight did Melanie's shoulders slump. A heavy, shuddering sigh escaped her lips as the adrenaline crashed, leaving her utterly exhausted.
Back in the hospital room.
Elias looked up as Preston walked through the door.
"Where's the Oracle? Where's Melanie?"
