Pushing her emotions aside, she locked her eyes onto the monitor.
It was the security footage.
Specifically, the cameras positioned outside the luxury hotel in Xavorn where the Carter Group had hosted their annual gala.
She had asked Elias to track down the mysterious little girl who had handed her the classified file folder that night.
Elias had been efficient, identifying the girl in record time.
But she was a dead end. She came from a totally ordinary family with no corporate ties.
Elias's team confirmed that a random passerby had just handed the girl the envelope and bribed her with a stuffed animal and some snacks to deliver it to Melanie.
Melanie knew Lily Miller was just a pawn.
But the so-called 'random passerby' was definitely not that simple.
At the very least, the folder contained tightly guarded secrets she hadn't been able to unearth herself.
She scrubbed through the footage, watching the scene play out again and again.
Suddenly, she clicked the mouse, freezing the frame.
On the screen, the lavish exterior of the hotel was bordered by a few upscale boutiques and a narrow, easily overlooked alleyway.
In the exact frame she paused on, the nose of a car was just barely poking out of the shadows of that alley.
"...Interesting," Melanie murmured, arching a brow.
Back at the hospital, Elias received Melanie's text and immediately went to fetch the doctor for Preston.
She was worried the rain had compromised his bandages and demanded Elias make sure he was treated—with strict instructions to keep her involvement a secret.
"Unbelievable. You two have a lover's quarrel, and I end up playing the errand boy," Elias grumbled, typing back to her:
Oracle, do I get some sort of reward for babysitting your boyfriend?
A few minutes later, his screen lit up with her reply:
You get the privilege of serving me. Shouldn't you feel honored?
Inside the cyber cafe, Melanie ejected the drive just as Elias's final response buzzed through:
Honored beyond words.
A faint smile touched her lips. She tossed her phone on the desk and booted up a game to kill some time.
Outside the cafe.
Standing behind a weathered brick wall, Philip held an umbrella with one hand. The heavy rain poured off the canvas edges like a crystal curtain.
