Preston went utterly silent.
He followed her gaze inside.
The walls were completely bare, stripped down to raw concrete. It was literally an unfinished construction site.
For a moment, Preston couldn't find a single word to defend himself.
It was officially the most humiliating moment he had ever experienced in front of her.
And arguably the worst logistical failure of Philip's career.
“So you're actually sleeping in there tonight?”
Melanie's voice dripped with malicious amusement.
Preston furrowed his brow and cautiously tested the waters.
“Could I maybe... crash at your place for the night?”
“No.”
Melanie shut him down effortlessly and pushed open her own door.
Preston noticed she didn't actually pull the door shut behind her.
It was the only opening he needed.
But he wasn't arrogant enough to assume she had deliberately left it ajar for him.
It was a cozy one-bedroom apartment, small but beautifully furnished and impeccably tidy.
Melanie was completely aware he had tailed her inside; it wasn't like she had miles of floor space to hide in.
“Honey...”
Before he could finish, she cut him off sharply.
“Don't call me that!”
Her face was a mask of cold fury.
“We broke up.”
A flash of raw agony tore through his eyes at those words.
Preston stared at her, his dark, mesmerizing eyes filled with desperate heartbreak.
“I never agreed to a breakup.”
The edge of his voice broke with pleading.
“Then consider it a unilateral decision.”
Melanie replied, cold and unyielding.
Preston's white-gloved hands curled into tight fists.
“Can you seriously not... give me a single chance to explain?”
