Melanie had rented a place in the area.
Since it was a short-term stay, the apartment was small and the furnishings were bare-bones.
Yet, when Preston followed her inside, a look of sheer wonder lit up his eyes, as if it was the finest house he had ever seen.
Even though he didn't say a word, his expression gave him away.
Melanie shot him a glance, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
Just what kind of life had this guy been living?
Lowell Plain wasn't rich, sure, but it was the modern era; people weren't living in the Dark Ages.
But this man, with a dark birthmark covering half his face, looked as though he had spent his entire life in absolute misery.
Melanie parted her lips.
There were questions right on the tip of her tongue.
But she held them back.
They were strangers who had met by chance; it wasn't her place to pry into his private life.
Suppressing her curiosity, she walked over to the fridge and pulled it open.
"You're in luck. I actually have some beef in here."
At the word "beef," Preston's eyes immediately lit up.
Seeing his reaction, she knew he was craving it.
"Be a good boy and go sit over there. I'll make you some Braised Beef Linguine."
When she pointed to the dining table, he walked over in silence and sat down.
His head remained lowered the entire time.
She couldn't tell if he kept it down out of a deep insecurity, or if he was simply afraid his face would scare her.
Pushing the thought aside, she took out the necessary ingredients, carried them into the kitchen, and started cooking.
All her attention was on the food. She had no idea that the man sitting at the table was stealing glances at her the whole time.
His gaze... was dark, but laced with confusion, curiosity, and a deep sense of awe.
Melanie was a fast cook, and boiling pasta didn't take long anyway.
Soon enough, she walked out of the kitchen carrying two steaming plates of Braised Beef Linguine.
