At the time, her first stop was Quillborne City in Quarevia.
However, her connections and funds were limited, so she didn't find out much.
The few clues she managed to dig up led her to expand her search to the small towns surrounding the city.
To this day, she couldn't quite remember the exact name of the town.
But it was there that she accidentally ran into a certain someone. Even if she couldn't clearly recall his face or every detail of what happened between them, she still remembered the broad strokes.
That person...
She now knew—
It was Preston.
Four years ago, Lowell Plain was a small place with a struggling economy.
She had only gone there because she found out her mother had visited the area while working on the VitalBreath Fortis project, so she went looking for leads.
Yet, the only information she could find was about a local family losing a child.
Maybe the kid wandered off, or maybe they were taken by traffickers.
With no further information, Melanie had been ready to pack up and go home.
But as she was casually walking past a narrow alley, she heard a vicious bout of screaming and cursing.
"I raised you all these years! So what if I take your paycheck?"
"If you weren't so damn ugly, our family wouldn't be doing this badly!"
"Don't tell me you work three jobs a day! You should be working thirty!"
"You dare talk back to me, you piece of trash! I'll beat you to death!"
"Get out! Get the hell out and don't come back!"
There was more than one voice—a man and a woman's voices overlapping, making her head pound just listening to it.
Melanie took a detour to avoid the alley, but ended up spotting a man standing near a deserted little convenience store.
Even though his head was lowered and he was curled up into himself, she could tell he had been beaten.
And beaten badly.
From his height and build, he was clearly an adult.
But her heart still ached in sympathy.
