Dominic was away on a business trip for a couple of days, so Evelyn had to handle their daughter alone.
Though Camilla wanted to help, she was the maid Melanie had hired. Lila didn't like her, and neither did Evelyn.
By the time she finally calmed Lila down and dropped her off at preschool, Evelyn felt like she'd aged ten years.
She logged into the forum on her computer. Schrödinger's Pill still hadn't replied.
Evelyn stomped her foot in frustration.
But then she considered that he was probably just playing hard to get. Even if he saw the message, he would pretend he hadn't.
Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief at the thought.
She left another private message for Schrödinger's Pill, this time stating her offer directly and leaving her contact information.
Melanie saw every message Evelyn sent.
But she didn't reply to a single one.
With each day she delayed, Evelyn's anxiety worsened, and her frustration grew more intense.
Back at the office, Dominic returned from his trip to find Evelyn looking haggard, her makeup carelessly applied.
"What's wrong with you? Is work not going well?"
"You'd like that, wouldn't you? Seeing me fail?" Evelyn snapped back.
Dominic was taken aback. "What's gotten into you? I was just asking because I care."
"Is this how you show you care? I'm here breaking my back for your company, and you? You go on a business trip and don't give me a second thought."
Dominic was exhausted from his own business dealings and didn't appreciate Evelyn's baseless accusations. His own temper flared.
"I was working, not on vacation. Besides, this project was originally Melanie's. You're the one who insisted on taking it. If you can't handle the pressure, you shouldn't have snatched it in the first place…"
Evelyn stared at him, wide-eyed and her eyes turning red, never expecting Dominic to say something like that.
"What do you mean, I *stole* it from Melanie…"
She put her hands on her hips, a bitter laugh escaping her.
"Do you think I didn't just steal her project, but her husband too?"
Dominic fell silent.
Although Evelyn was the one he loved, Melanie was the one he was engaged to by arrangement, and Melanie was the one he had officially married.
No matter how much of a party girl Melanie was, no matter how little self-respect she seemed to have, she was his wife.
