Every eye in the boutique snapped to Valerie.
She thrust her chin into the air, puffing out her chest as if trying to physically loom over Melanie.
In reality, they were exactly the same height.
As a commercial model, Valerie wasn't exceptionally tall, which was why she was relegated to print ads instead of the runway.
"This dress... is... mine!"
She spat out the last words, emphasizing every syllable.
"Um..."
The muscles in the manager's face locked up.
"Ms. Vaughn, this gentleman and lady have already decided to purchase the dress. As you can see..."
"I don't care!"
Valerie kept her hands firmly planted on her hips, acting entirely justified.
"They haven't paid yet, have they? Since the transaction isn't complete, it's still store property. I have every right to buy it."
"But..."
"But what? Did you forget who I am? I'm a VIP. I have priority purchasing rights!"
Valerie sounded utterly convinced of her own logic, though the manager and the staff knew she was being completely irrational.
She shopped here all the time; since when did being a VIP grant the right to snatch clothing out of another customer's hands?
Yet, the manager didn't dare offend her directly.
Valerie had a nasty habit of seducing powerful, wealthy men.
Who knew if tomorrow she'd end up in bed with the CEO of their parent company?
Meanwhile, Melanie and Preston were undeniably gorgeous and carried an air of extreme refinement. They clearly came from money.
But their accents proved they weren't Ruben Isle locals.
Caught in the crossfire, the manager was terrified to hand the dress over to them.
Even though they were first.
Seeing the staff freeze in terrified indecision, Preston's expression turned frigid.
She was going to buy this dress today if it killed her!
"You mainlanders clearly have no idea how things work here."
Valerie smirked, swaying her hips as she stepped right up to Melanie and Preston.
"My boyfriend... is the CEO of Vanguard Medical Systems. He's very close with Elie Saab's regional manager..."
She cast a triumphant, threatening glare at the terrified boutique staff.
"So even if they had a hundred times the courage, they wouldn't dare sell this to you. You can give up right now!"
Trying to snatch a dress from her?
They were digging their own graves!
Seeing the vicious, gloating look in Valerie's eyes, Melanie decided to drop it.
It was just a dress. She didn't care enough to get these innocent retail workers fired over it.
Sensing she was about to walk away, Preston suddenly caught her wrist.
Melanie paused, looking back at him with confusion.
