Melanie quietly observed Sebastian.
He was back in his signature white lab coat. Honestly, compared to the tailored white suit he had worn the night before, Melanie thought the lab coat suited him much better. It gave him an aura of refined intellect and academic authority.
It was obvious that Sebastian took immense pride in becoming the Head of Oncology at Ruben Isle University Medical Center at such a young age. The lab coat cemented his professional identity, amplifying his commanding presence.
Around her, a flurry of whispers erupted. The female students in the hall practically vibrated with excitement.
"Director York is so gorgeous!"
"I heard he's still single!"
"No way, really?"
"Yeah, I swear! In the York family, only the eldest brother is married right now."
"But didn't I read they're in the middle of a messy divorce?"
"Shh! Keep your voice down. Those are just rumors."
"Even if they are divorcing, it makes sense. I hear the Eldest York Heir has women stashed everywhere."
"Well, with their money and power, it's expected... But Director York is different."
"Exactly! Director York is a pure academic. He might be from the York family, but he earned his department head title through pure medical genius."
"Just goes to show that rich kids can actually be brilliant. Director York is the perfect example!"
"Which means his standards for women must be sky-high. That explains why he doesn't have a girlfriend yet!"
"And that's exactly why half the campus is obsessed with him!"
"Including us delusional fangirls! Hahaha!"
A chorus of poorly suppressed, giggly laughter floated over from the row next to Melanie.
"Quiet down, everyone."
Standing at the podium, Sebastian tapped a marker against the whiteboard. "The lecture is about to begin. Please take your seats and keep the noise down."
At his command, the massive lecture hall fell into a hushed silence.
Sebastian's gaze swept over the sea of students. Melanie couldn't shake the feeling that his eyes lingered on her for a fraction of a second too long.
After a brief pause, he posed the question:
"Suppose a new targeted therapy drug enters the market. Its efficacy is definitively superior to the current standard of care, and its side effects are milder. For a newly diagnosed patient, do you immediately prescribe the new drug, or do you start with the old drug and switch to the new one only after resistance develops?"
The moment the question left his lips, a girl in the front shot her hand into the air.
"Yes, go ahead," Sebastian acknowledged.
The girl stood up, brimming with absolute confidence.
"Whoa... it's the top student of our year!"
"It's Quinn Lennox."
"Do you think Director York likes Quinn? She's the campus beauty, after all."
"I don't know about him, but Quinn is definitely obsessed with Director York."
