She threw her arms out to block Herbert, her voice shaking as she begged, "Please, calm down. Can we just wait until after Miles's surgery to talk about this? He's still on the operating table. He's in critical condition. No matter how angry you are at your sister, it's her fault, not Miles's. He didn't do anything wrong! He called you Dad for six years, he loves you!"
Herbert stared at Valery with bloodshot eyes, his expression a mix of shock, confusion, and raw, agonizing pain. "Mom, you knew, didn't you? You knew from the very beginning that she swapped my baby, didn't you? You knew, and you helped her hide it. Is that right?"
"I..." Faced with her own son's devastating interrogation, Valery's eyes darted away. "My hands were tied back then. Cora is my daughter, your sister."
"Then what about my child?! Was he not family too?! That was your real grandchild!"
Herbert fired the questions in a desperate fury, but Valery had no defense. All she could do was repeat, "Herbert, you have to understand. Your sister and I had no choice..."
"What do you mean you had no choice?!" Wade, who had just downed his second dose of heart medication, finally stabilized enough to speak.
He stormed forward, demanding furiously, "When did Cora even have a child?! Why wasn't I, her father, told about this?!"
Cora hid behind Valery, too terrified to even breathe. The brief surge of courage she'd found when Miles was dying had completely vanished in the face of her father's and brother's absolute rage.
She didn't dare speak, leaving Valery to stammer out the explanation. "You've always cared so much about the family's reputation. A scandalous, out-of-wedlock pregnancy... how could we possibly tell you?"
Wade's chest hitched, and he nearly choked on his own breath. "And now?! Is this not a scandal now?!"
Their reputation was already utterly destroyed!
At that moment, a medical worker stepped out to announce that the blood transfusion for Miles had been successfully started.
The family's focus momentarily snapped back to the surgery.
Cora and Valery both let out massive sighs of relief.
