That final slap was so forceful that Valery's face instantly swelled up, and blood began to trickle from the corner of her mouth.
"Ah! Hulda, you bitch, don't you dare hit my mother!" Cora's manic energy surged, and she lunged violently toward Hulda.
"Hulda!"
"Hulda!"
Justin and Herbert shouted her name at the exact same time.
The hospital room wasn't supposed to be crowded, so Herbert, Justin, and Wade had been waiting out in the hallway. Hearing the violent commotion, the three men quickly rushed inside.
Hulda didn't even look at them. Right before they could reach her, she forcefully shoved Valery aside. As Cora charged at her with her purse raised like a weapon, Hulda's hand shot out, locking in a brutal grip around Cora's throat and slamming her hard against the wall.
Her hands were the hands that cooked and carried a child, but they were also the hands of a researcher who handled heavy equipment. They were hands that could pull a horse's reins and draw a bowstring. Naturally, they had no trouble choking someone.
Hulda pinned Cora against the wall with a single hand, clamping down so hard that an immediate, terrifying wave of suffocation washed over Cora. Blood rushed to her head, making it feel like her brain and lungs were going to explode.
"H... Hulda... let... me go..."
"Ah! Hulda! Let go of my daughter!" Valery's face was swollen and red, her words slurring. She reached out, trying to scratch at Hulda, but suddenly, a cold glint of metal flashed before her eyes.
Hulda had materialized a high-precision caliper in her hand—the exact same tool she always carried with her for precision measurements during her fieldwork in the mountains.
Right now, the sharp, needle-like tip of that caliper was pressed directly against Cora's eyeball. If Hulda's hand twitched even a fraction of an inch, Cora would be permanently blinded.
"Ah!" Valery shrieked in terror, immediately clapping both hands over her own mouth. She didn't dare move another muscle or provoke Hulda any further, utterly terrified that the younger woman's hand might slip.
"Hulda, don't do anything crazy!" Herbert stepped forward in a panic. This was the very first time he had ever seen her like this—so absolutely reckless, as if she had nothing left to lose.
"Hulda, let Cora go first, and we can talk this out calmly!" Wade moved to step in, but Justin quickly grabbed him by the arm to hold him back.
"Mr. Jewell, do not trigger her." Even though Justin didn't know the exact details of what had just happened, he knew one thing for certain: pushing Hulda right now was a deadly mistake.
