"We've known each other for over twenty years, and you call me a murderer? You use a word that disgusting to describe me?"
"But honestly, even if I hadn't done anything, how much longer did Shera's father really have to live?"
Her lips trembled, pure venom and jealousy hijacking her brain.
Helga shakily forced herself to her feet, acting as though she held the moral high ground. "I asked the hospital back then! He only had a few years left anyway! Even if he had the surgery, he was on borrowed time!"
"Why are you pinning all of this entirely on me?"
She stared at the envelope in his hand—the very thing that could destroy the rest of her life.
Now he was willing to ruin her just to beg for another woman's forgiveness.
Why?
Their bond was supposed to be stronger than anything!
Caden stared at her, his eyes full of complex emotions. He had clearly never expected her to say something so incredibly unhinged.
He scoffed. "Helga, you make me sick."
Sick?
Helga let out a sudden, sharp laugh. "I make you sick?"
Her chest heaved violently as the overwhelming sense of injustice morphed into blind fury, and she threw it all back at him without a second thought.
"Do you really think I'm the only one responsible for this?"
She frowned, looking at Caden with absolute mockery.
"Wasn't it you?"
"Yes, I hired someone! Yes, I buried the notice! But what about you? You were the one ignoring her! She called you, she texted you, and you were the one who didn't pick up! That wasn't me!"
Helga took a step closer, locking eyes with Caden for the first time with such defiance, fully absorbing the disgust written all over his face.
"What right do you have to call me sick? If you actually cared about her, if you actually loved her, would I have ever had a chance to do any of this?"
"You just want to shift the blame onto me so you can sleep at night! If you cared so much, why didn't you go to the hospital and ask the doctors yourself? Why didn't you ask Shera?"
"You never even went to visit your so-called father-in-law! You never even called him 'Dad'!"
