Caden Hayes was still gripping Helga Sutton's arm, but he instinctively let go when he saw who was approaching.
One face was etched with fury; the other was streaked with tears.
"Did Mr. Spencer call me over just to witness this?"
Behind them, Solomon emerged from the shadows. "No, didn't you just hear? This is all a huge misunderstanding."
"A misunderstanding?" Shera ignored Helga and looked straight at Caden. "Where exactly is the misunderstanding?"
Caden held out the manila envelope to her. "I've investigated everything. Everything concerning you."
"Including your father, the competition, and the car accident."
Shera lowered her gaze, her eyes landing on the envelope in his hand.
Just as she reached out to take it, Helga snatched it away.
Panic flashed in her eyes. "Ms... Ms. Jewell, none of this is true. Lucius exaggerated everything. You can't believe him."
Shera looked at the crumpled envelope clutched tightly against Helga's chest and let out a soft laugh.
"Exaggerated?"
Shera took a step forward, her heels clicking sharply against the ground, and reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind Helga's ear.
"Ms. Sutton, you really do have the kind of face that makes everyone want to protect you."
"But I am not Caden Hayes. I won't be fooled by your innocent act."
Looking into those tearful eyes, Shera was reminded of the conversation she had just overheard inside.
*But even without me, how much longer did Shera's father really have?*
*I checked with the hospital back then. He only had a few years left anyway, even with the surgery.*
The fury building inside Shera finally reached its boiling point.
The smile instantly vanished from her lips.
*Slap—*
