Tristan glanced at the rearview mirror, asking for instructions. "Boss, should we go in and check on her, or head straight to the conference center?"
Miles hadn't planned on getting out, but a nagging worry that Quinn might actually get hurt kept him planted.
Since they weren't officially divorced yet, he sighed and followed Tristan inside to see what was happening.
Quinn was sick with anxiety as she scoured the club for her brother, her forehead slick with cold sweat. But the moment she rounded the corner, the sight before her froze her solid.
She had been tearing her heart out, terrified he was dying. She had swallowed her pride and begged Miles for help.
Yet there AJ was, leaning casually against the wall, happily puffing on a cigarette.
Half an hour ago, he was screaming on the phone, claiming he was beaten so badly he couldn't move and his legs were about to be snapped.
But the man leaning against the wall didn't look like he had a single scratch on him.
His limbs were perfectly intact, and the thugs surrounding him were bowing and scraping.
One of them carefully lit his cigarette, reverently calling him, "Boss Avery."
"Boss Avery, is your brother-in-law seriously the heir to York Enterprises?"
AJ tilted his chin up smugly. "Damn straight. Just wait till my sister gets here and flashes their marriage certificate. Then you'll see if I'm bullshitting you!"
A thug with bleached blond hair laughed nervously. "Oh man, Boss Avery, you should've said so earlier! We were just getting to know each other, right?"
"Yeah, bro. You've gotta look out for us from now on."
AJ accepted the cigarette handed to him, soaking in the endless flattery. His massive ego was thoroughly satisfied.
Watching this grotesque display, a wave of absolute disgust washed over Quinn. She had nearly worked herself into a panic attack, and he was here smoking and playing mafia boss.
"AJ. Didn't you say your legs were broken?"
Seeing his sister, AJ quickly stamped out his cigarette and trotted over with a massive grin.
Their loud, obnoxious flattery was as grating as it was pathetic.
Quinn stood rooted to the spot, her chest caving in on itself. A suffocating knot twisted in her stomach, leaving her drowning in sheer humiliation.
Miles's face was a mask of absolute frost, radiating a terrifying, detached hostility.
The dark, heavy weight of his gaze slammed into Quinn, strapping an unbearable shackle to her chest that made it impossible to breathe.
She could practically feel the overwhelming disgust and mockery bleeding from his eyes.
Tristan shook his head, his face an open book of disappointment and frustration.
His boss's time was worth millions, yet he had thrown it away to rush here for his wife—only to find out it was a pathetic scam.
Worse, AJ was parading around using Mr. York's name to act like a gangster. It was utterly repulsive.
No wonder Grandma Evelyn and the rest of the York family despised Quinn. With a family like this, who would ever want them around?

I would have accepted the jerk husband ending up with the heroine if he’s only powerful, intelligent but he’s so powerless and so stupid....
Can you make Ethan be the endgame? That Miles is a total jerk....
