"You're going to need a tetanus shot for that cut."
Last time, her mother-in-law had forced her to stand stubbornly in the pouring rain, leaving her completely exhausted and on the verge of collapsing.
A few weeks before that, she had been hit by a falling object while clearing the attic, leaving a massive bruise on her lower back...
Zachary couldn't even count how many times he had been called to Regency Bay over the years.
"Thank you so much, Dr. Wells."
"Don't mention it."
After carefully bandaging her palm, Zachary stepped out into the hallway and finally realized she was staying in a maid's quarters.
He frowned deeply. "She lives in this room?"
The maid sighed softly. "Yes. Mrs. York insisted she stay in the servant's wing."
Though it was different from the other staff rooms—which were shared—hers was at least private.
She had kept it meticulously clean. There were two cartoon throw pillows on the bed, looking like children's toys.
On the windowsill sat a small, vibrant jasmine plant, its buds giving off a faint, sweet fragrance.
It brought a touch of life to the otherwise bleak and suffocating little room.
Zachary gave the maid a few medical instructions before heading upstairs to find Miles.
"I'm basically your family's personal physician at this point. It hasn't even been that long, and your wife is injured again?"
Miles looked up, a mocking smirk playing on his lips. "It's just a contract. She isn't my wife."
Zachary adjusted his glasses. "If she isn't your wife, then you shouldn't have married her in the first place."
"Is this how you treat someone after making them your legal spouse?" Zachary pressed.
Miles frowned. "The York family hasn't mistreated her."
"It's her own fault for having no..." shame or self-respect.
He cut himself off. A sudden surge of suffocating irritation flooded his chest, and a dark shadow fell over his handsome face.
