The VIP ward.
Luther sat on the sofa, his phone in his hand, watching that dashcam footage over and over again.
From start to finish, he had played it at least dozens of times.
After the two cars collided, Jolie fainted in the driver's seat. Her car had only sustained minor damage. Meanwhile, the front end of Hilda's car was entirely crushed. It was probably sheer luck that the airbags deployed perfectly to protect her, leaving her without major injuries.
About two minutes in.
Hilda struggled to open her car door.
Her body was swaying, barely able to stay upright.
Her hand gently cradled her lower abdomen as she stared blankly ahead.
The distant wail of sirens and ambulances echoed.
Hilda's face was a mask of pure daze.
The video abruptly ended.
The traffic department stated that, based on this footage, Jolie was entirely at fault.
Jolie had intentionally rammed into Hilda's car.
Luther looked over at Jolie.
The woman was lying in the hospital bed, tears streaming down her face continuously as she babbled strange, fragile words: "I'm not a bitch! I'm not a bitch! I loved Luther first! I already let you have him, Sister. Why did you still call me a bitch? Why did you call me the other woman? I've always yielded to you since we were kids. Why treat me like this? Why keep provoking me? I already wanted to back off, so why do this to me? Why?"
A nurse came over to set up her IV drip.
The woman looked at the nurse as if she had seen a ghost.
Ignoring her fresh wounds, she sat up and hugged her head in sheer terror.
"Don't hit me, Sister."
"I know I'm just an illegitimate child."
"I won't fight with you anymore."
"Don't yell at me, don't hit me, I'm not a bitch."
Luther gripped his phone, his heart breaking into pieces.
The nurse still needed to administer the IV.
The woman threw herself into Luther's arms, curling into a tiny ball, sobbing softly.
Luther had no choice but to ask the nurse to step out for a moment.
Only the two of them remained in the room.
They held each other for a long time.
The woman gradually calmed down, finding a temporary sliver of peace. She spoke very, very softly: "Luther, I can never have children now. I'm no longer a complete woman. Go back to my sister! No matter what, she can still give you a family. You two already have a beautiful child together, but I have absolutely nothing."
She suddenly shoved him away.
She fiercely told him to get out.
Mina wept tears of joy.
Covering her mouth, she broke down into loud sobs.
There was zero trace of emotion on Luther's face.
He didn't understand why, after uttering those words, he felt such a blinding pain.
At this moment, he deeply resented Hilda.
Why did she have to demean Jolie so viciously?
If they had just gotten along, if she hadn't provoked Jolie, Jolie would have already gone abroad.
They could have lived happily together.
—Along with little Annie.
Why did she have to push things this far?
Luther fiercely hated Hilda, but he hated himself even more. Knowing how awful Hilda was, he still couldn't seem to let go. He was still reminiscing about the half-year they spent living together. In the dead of night, his mind was entirely consumed by her enchanting image.
He loathed himself for being this way.
He wanted to be cruel and callous.
Only then would he stop feeling like a stranger to himself.
Someone he didn't even recognize.
