That very night.
The news of Luther and Hilda's divorce was completely exposed.
Because Harrell and Luther got into a fistfight that landed them both in the precinct.
The one who had to come bail them out was Eleanor Judson.
...
Late at night, a luxurious black van screeched to a halt outside an Alpha City police precinct.
Eleanor Judson stepped out and hurried inside.
As soon as she walked in, she saw both her son and her nephew sporting bruised faces.
Both of them were her flesh and blood.
As Eleanor marched over, she couldn't stop herself from slapping each of them hard across the face. Right in front of the officers, she started scolding them, "Are you both out of your minds? You are brothers, family! Why are you brawling like thugs? If word of this reaches the old man in Havenworth City, see how he handles you! You've lived too comfortably. Go outside and see how many people spend their entire lives struggling just to eat. Who has the luxury of getting into fistfights?"
Harrell took the slap from his aunt.
But he wasn't intimidated. He just pulled out a cigarette.
"I threw the first punch."
"My cousin put his hands on Hilda over some cheap woman."
"He slapped Hilda twice."
"He divorced her."
"And he left her with absolutely nothing."
"You're incredible, cousin. I never knew you had it in you. Why didn't you go after your true love years ago? Do you know you wasted years of Hilda's youth? You have no idea what she lost because of you. All you can think about is that cheap woman's womb. If you ask me, those inferior genes have absolutely no business being passed down anyway."
Eleanor's vision went black.
What was she hearing?
Luther and Hilda divorced.
Hilda walked away with nothing.
Luther opened his mouth to speak.
Eleanor slapped him again and snapped, "Shut up."
Everyone was stunned.
Even the precinct captain was dumbfounded, taking a long moment before finally lighting his cigarette. Tonight was definitely not a waste of time. You couldn't easily hear this level of high-society drama. This was first-hand gossip! It was a shame he had to maintain professional ethics.
He glanced at his squad of rookies.
Still a shame.
If they sold this to the tabloids, they'd make a fortune.
Luther was also completely shell-shocked.
He never expected his mother to react this way.
"But now that they're divorced, I have the right to pursue her. Whether we stay innocent in the future remains to be seen. Auntie, I genuinely love her. You aren't going to stop me, are you? I know the family won't approve, and my mom will be the first to object. But in this life, how many people do you meet that you truly love? I love her, my heart aches for her, and I respect her even more. When I'm with her, I feel complete joy. I know she is the girl I've been waiting for, and I'm willing to give her my whole heart. I know you feel that the child in her belly is your own flesh and blood. But Auntie, my cousin is the one who didn't want her. He blindly protects Jolie Lovell. Do you really have the heart to make Hilda stay with him? This time, Hilda nearly miscarried. She's in the hospital right now fighting to keep the baby. If you force the announcement of her pregnancy, do you think my cousin will actually cherish her? I think he would just snatch the baby away and give it to Jolie to raise. That woman's removed womb is the great tragedy of my cousin's life. Do you really want Hilda to endure a marriage like that? You're a woman too. Do you have the heart to push her back into the fire?"
Eleanor was completely paralyzed.
It was Luther's child.
But they were already divorced.
Luther was foolishly protecting that cheap woman.
He had shattered Hilda's heart. There was no going back, no hope of ever fixing this broken mirror.
In that instant, Eleanor seemed to age several years.
She didn't tell Harrell what her decision was.
She simply walked out like a ghost.
Luther stood up and approached her. "Mom."
Furious and heartbroken, Eleanor raised her hand and slapped him again. Her lips trembled so violently she could barely speak. "Don't you ever... bother Hilda again. Since you're divorced, stay away completely."
Luther looked over at Harrell standing behind her.
He furrowed his brows slightly.
Why would he bother Hilda?
They had made things crystal clear. They were done, completely and utterly.
