Luther stared into her eyes. "Are you serious?"
Hilda kept her face buried in his chest. "Yes. Luther, don't you want to live a good life together? From now on, we'll live well. You, me, and Annie will live together. We'll have another child. As for Landon... I won't go visit him often in the future. I know you like me being here. If we miss him, we can just bring him to Alpha City."
She was protecting Harrell.
Luther could obviously hear it.
But he didn't care as much anymore.
As long as Hilda stayed by his side, given enough time, her heart would naturally come back to him.
Harrell wasn't waking up.
Anyone would slowly lose hope.
Luther kissed her cheek.
And pressed her down again.
Lately, he demanded a lot.
Partly because he had a high sex drive.
Partly because of a hidden, dark urge in his heart.
He somewhat wanted to compare. He liked seeing Hilda break down, liked seeing her lose control because of him. Only then could he be certain that she belonged to him, that she had returned to his side.
...
Before Landon returned to Havenworth City, Hilda brought Annie over to stay for two days.
Landon was very happy with his mother and sister.
A fourteen-month-old baby, sweet and carefree.
Hilda knew that after this parting, it would be hard to see him again.
She prepared a lot of new clothes for Landon, and even bought him a new backpack. He would look so proud wearing it when he went to school. This was her biological flesh and blood; how could she not miss him or worry about him? But she owed Harrell too much. While he lay there, she had to leave him a bit of hope, a bloodline for Harrell's parents.
But this was a piece of her own flesh.
Every night, Hilda would quietly hold Landon.
Talking to him over and over again.
Singing lullabies to him over and over again.
She wanted to engrave his mother's voice into the child's memory.
In occasional dreams, she would be with Landon.
*Grow up quickly, Landon.*
*Landon, be sweet and carefree for the rest of your life.*
*Harrell, if you wake up, raise our son well.*
*And I will live my life far, far away.*
