Hilda shook her head. "No, I just threw it on."
Luther leaned back lazily against the sofa.
He pulled her close, slipping his hand past the collar of her coat to stroke her waist through the thin fabric of her sweater. Pretending to check her watch, Hilda softly reminded him, "We need to leave by three-thirty."
Luther simply stared at her in silence.
After a moment, he smiled faintly. "Bring Landon in. I want to see him one more time."
Deciding it was best to comply, Hilda got up and went to fetch the baby.
By the time she returned, Luther had already put his suit jacket back on.
His overcoat was draped neatly over a chair.
He was completely alert, looking as sharp and refreshed as if he hadn't had a single drop of alcohol.
Landon was just learning to walk.
When Hilda set him down at the doorway, the toddler wobbled unsteadily toward Luther. He recognized the man, flashing a wide, gummy smile. "Dada, Dada..."
Luther crouched down and scooped the boy up.
He held Landon for a long time before tilting his head back to look at Hilda, his expression entirely serious. "If it's really tearing you apart, take him back with us. We can even move Uncle Harrison and Aunt Catherine to Alpha City. Harrell, too, if you want. That way, you wouldn't have to worry, and whether or not we have more kids would be completely up to you."
It was the greatest concession Luther had ever offered.
It was his way of saying he was willing to fully absorb the Judson family into his world.
He had hurt her, and now he wanted to make amends. He desperately wanted her to say yes.
But Hilda gave a small, firm shake of her head.
She wanted Landon to stay safely in Havenworth City.
Luther stared at her, a fleeting shadow of disappointment crossing his dark eyes, but he kept his silence. He pressed a kiss to Landon's forehead, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a priceless carved emerald pendant. With practiced care, he clasped it around the baby's neck. He gave the boy one last kiss. "Daddy has to go now. Give me a kiss goodbye."
Landon blinked at him.
Then he looked over at Hilda.
Suddenly, the little boy burst into loud, heartbroken wails.
