Deep into the night.
Lori arrived at Silverlake Villa.
The moment she stepped into the master suite, the heavy, unmistakable scent of sex hit her like a physical blow. Though her heart raced with unease, she pushed forward into the study. Luther sat behind the massive mahogany desk, his shirt unbuttoned, a cigarette smoldering between his fingers.
Having worked for him for years, Lori knew his moods better than anyone.
She knew immediately that something catastrophic had happened.
She stepped up to the desk. "Mr. Sanford."
Luther crushed the cigarette into an ashtray and looked up at her, his voice devoid of warmth. "Harrell is awake."
Lori froze.
She had absolutely no idea how to respond to that.
Her eyes darted involuntarily toward the bedroom doors.
"Hilda won't wake up," Luther said flatly. "She's completely exhausted. Lori, I need you to gather every piece of dirt you can find on Naomi Zeller. Everything. Also, tell Warren to forward me the operational data for Judson Corporation immediately. Tell him if he spots any hidden capital interfering with the daily operations, he is not to alert anyone. That'll be Harrell pulling the strings. He just needs to report it directly to me."
Lori was completely stunned.
Naomi?
What exactly was he planning to do?
Luther's dark eyes locked onto hers. "Hilda had better not try to leave me. Because if she does, she's going to face a very painful ultimatum, and I'd hate to see her suffer... Annie needs a mother, and I need a wife. We've gone through hell to put this broken mirror back together."
Lately, he had actually felt happy.
Even with her icy demeanor, he felt complete.
Lori opened her mouth, desperate to say something to talk him down.
Luther saw right through her. "If you can't stomach this, I'll find someone who can. I know you care about Hilda. You'll naturally try to make things easier for her, and I don't mind you looking out for her. But do not test my bottom line. My absolute bottom line is that Hilda remains Mrs. Sanford."
Lori's face drained of color, her expression turning grim.
By the time she walked out of the villa, her legs were shaking. She knew exactly how ruthless Luther's methods were, and she knew exactly how much Annie meant to Hilda. And Naomi... Hilda had single-handedly mentored and sponsored that girl. Now that Naomi was in a position of power, was Luther really going to destroy her just to keep Hilda in line?
And then there was Harrell.
The man who held Hilda's heart.
Could Hilda ever truly escape this?
