On the way back.
Luther pulled the car to the side of the street.
He stood in line himself just to buy a fresh serving of Spicy Rice Cakes.
By the time he returned to the car, his hands were freezing, but the food was steaming hot. He pressed the container into Hilda's hands, glancing back at Annie, who had already fallen asleep in the backseat. "Let's eat it in the car," he suggested softly. "It won't taste as good if we wait until it gets cold."
Though her appetite was completely gone, Hilda took small, forced bites, terrified that Luther would suspect something if she refused.
The car eventually rolled to a stop at a red light.
Luther shifted into park and turned to look at her. A playful, magnetic smile touched his lips as he tapped a finger against his own mouth. It took Hilda a second to realize he wanted her to feed him. For a normal married couple, it would be a completely natural, intimate gesture. But they weren't a real married couple anymore, and doing something so tender felt impossible to stomach.
Yet Luther just sat there, smiling that unwavering smile, waiting.
Reluctantly, Hilda pierced a small piece of rice cake with her fork and lifted it toward him.
Instead of taking the food, Luther's hand shot out, capturing her wrist. He pushed the fork aside and crashed his lips down onto hers. She gasped in shock, trying to turn her head away, but he refused to let her go. He anchored his hand behind her neck, dominating her in a punishing, inescapable kiss. For the entire 59-second duration of the red light, he devoured her mouth. When he finally pulled back, a low, dark chuckle rumbled in his chest, his eyes flashing with raw, predatory possession.
Hilda pushed against his chest, grasping for an excuse. "The light is green."
Luther's eyes darkened further. "We'll finish this when we get home."
Hilda didn't agree, but she didn't refuse either.
It wasn't something she could fight.
If she completely shut him out tonight, she knew his paranoia would spike. Her mind was an absolute mess. She desperately wanted to see Harrell again, yet she was terrified of what would happen if she did. She remained in a panicked daze until the car pulled up to the villa. Luther patted her slender shoulder, his voice impossibly gentle. "We're home! Grab the bags, I'll carry Annie upstairs."
The sound of his voice snapped her back to reality.
...
The night was biting cold.
Luther stepped out of the car wearing only his dress shirt and suit trousers.
