Hilda happened to catch sight of Luther.
He stood there in a tailored suit.
His eyes were an unfathomable dark abyss.
Completely devoid of any readable emotion.
The smile froze on Hilda's lips. She blinked slowly, making sure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her. It was Luther. He had come after them.
No, he had known she was leaving all along.
He knew Harrell had woken up.
He just never called her out on it.
This entire time, he had been testing her. He watched her prepare to flee, watched her make her choice, and even stayed away from home to give her the perfect window to escape. Luther had known everything. She had severely underestimated him.
Standing twenty feet away.
Luther looked at her, his expression remarkably calm. "Bring Annie and Landon back, and I will pretend none of this ever happened. We will still get our license on March 8th, and we will have our wedding on the 20th."
His tone was flat, but for him, it was a massive concession.
He was willing to forgive her betrayal.
Hilda stared at him in silence.
Annie gripped her hand tightly. For a child, this was agonizing. She had genuinely built a bond with her father recently, and she didn't want to leave him, but she also wanted to live with Harrell.
After a long, suffocating pause, Hilda lowered her eyes and mouthed three words.
*I am sorry.*
Then, she linked her arm through Harrell's and led Annie toward the VIP security lane.
This departure was practically a final farewell.
The love and hate between her and Luther would vanish into the past.
Behind them, Luther stood perfectly still. He watched her choose Harrell, watched her walk away without a single backward glance, realizing she truly didn't love him at all anymore.
A clean break?
He scoffed internally. He couldn't do it.
He made no move to stop her because he knew she wasn't going anywhere. He knew her weaknesses far too well.
Hilda and Harrell entered the VIP security lane.
Directly across from them was a massive digital billboard.
At that exact moment, the news broadcast began—
[Harrison Judson of Judson Corporation in Havenworth City has been detained under suspicion of illegal financial transactions. Reports suggest ties to corporate bribery involving Naomi Zeller of the French company Mokshalia. Naomi Zeller has been suspended pending an internal investigation. If convicted, she faces a decade in federal prison.]
The screen displayed footage of investigators escorting Harrison out of the Judson Corporation headquarters.
The entire security checkpoint seemed to freeze.
Harrell stared up at the billboard.
Hilda did too.
Harrison. Naomi. The people they loved most.
Luther had known they were leaving and planned this all along.
