Luther's expression instantly darkened to a thunderous scowl.

And at that exact, horrifyingly perfect moment, a distinct, incredibly un-elegant sound echoed through the room.

*Pfft...*

Jocelyn had, in fact, let out a massive, undeniably lethal fart.

Luther's face turned entirely black.

Damien aggressively snatched the toddler out of his arms, his tone dripping with weaponized sarcasm. "Kids are just messy, fragile little nightmares, you know? A refined billionaire like you couldn't possibly handle the chaos. Better leave the heavy lifting to me! Oh, and it's getting late, so we won't keep you. You're a very high-profile man, Mr. Sanford, and my sister still needs to protect her perfectly clean reputation before she eventually settles down and gets married."

Damien knew exactly where Luther's deepest insecurities lay, and he drove the knife in repeatedly.

Joyce was practically having a panic attack.

*Damien, please! For the love of my sanity and our mortgage, just play nice!*

Damien's internal monologue, however, was running a very different script—

*We don't have to play nice at all, sis.*

*I could literally spit in this bastard's face and he'd just stand there and take it.*

...

Once Luther finally, begrudgingly left, Damien carried Jocelyn upstairs, tucked her into bed, and carefully pulled the blankets up to her chin.

She looked so incredibly soft and perfect. He couldn't resist pressing a loving kiss to her chubby cheek.

His eyes suddenly burned with unshed tears. He had raised this girl since she was a tiny, fragile newborn. She had been calling him 'Dad' since the moment she learned to speak. The very thought of handing her over to Luther physically made him want to vomit. But what choice did he really have? He didn't possess the power to protect Joyce and Jocelyn from the world. If he tried to wage an all-out war against Luther, Joyce would be the one caught in the crossfire.

He hadn't even bothered asking Joyce what happened tonight.

He already knew exactly how it played out.

Joyce and Jocelyn were his entire reason for breathing. If it came down to it, he would gladly take a bullet for them.

Sensing his heavy, melancholic mood, Joyce felt a spike of anxiety. "Damien?"

Damien instantly masked his emotions, reaching out to affectionately ruffle her hair. "I'm fine. Just a little exhausted. There's a massive learning curve at the new corporate job."

A sudden, terrifying thought struck Joyce.
