Luther returned to the apartment.
He walked into the master bedroom. The lights were off, and only the moonlight spilled in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a hazy glow over the room. Hilda was sitting on the English-style armchair by the window, staring blankly at him.
Luther undid a few buttons on his shirt.
His gaze settled on her face.
His voice was soft—
"Hilda, the DNA results will only say she is a legitimate child."
"Mrs. Sanford doesn't have illegitimate children."
"And she certainly doesn't sleep with other men."
...
Hilda suddenly understood.
Luther wasn't just sending her to Switzerland to make her his mistress.
He was doing it to protect his reputation.
He was permanently cutting off her contact with Soren.
Sure enough, the way Luther looked at her was incredibly complex.
There was a primal, physical desire.
—But emotionally, there was deep resentment.
...
Early the next morning.
Hilda was relocated to a private villa guarded inside and out by roughly twenty security personnel. Forget a person—not even a mosquito could fly out of there.
Luther confiscated Hilda's phone.
She was completely cut off from the outside world.
The man was in the walk-in closet, changing his clothes.
He was about to head to the company to lead a board meeting.
Hilda followed him in, keeping her voice low as she pleaded, "Luther, I won't take the child and run. Let me go back. I have important things to handle... Once the DNA results come out, you can arrange things however you want. Please?"
Luther was tying his tie.
He watched her in the mirror for a moment before finishing the knot. His voice was steady. "Stay here. Once the visas are issued, a private team will fly you to Switzerland. I'll be staying at the office for the next few days. If you need anything, tell the guards."
He walked out of the closet.
Hilda chased after him. "Luther."
When he turned around, his expression was filled with disgust.
Exactly like it was on their wedding night.
Hilda froze, and her fingers slowly uncurled. She didn't beg him again.
All she could do was wait. Wait for the DNA results.
Otherwise, she would never be able to leave.
"Once I finish here, I'll fly to Switzerland."
"Are the DNA results out? No one is allowed to open the envelope. I will announce the results personally at the press conference."
...
Lori understood his intent.
He was protecting Hilda's reputation, but moving forward, she would likely be reduced to the role of a mistress.
Lori gave him the facts—
"The DNA test results will be out in an hour."
"Do you want to wait, Mr. Sanford?"
"Should we delay the flight?"
...
Luther gave her a flat look.
Lori didn't dare say another word.
They waited until the testing facility called, saying the documents had been delivered and the courier was downstairs. Lori hung up and turned to Luther. "Mr. Sanford, the DNA results are here. I'll go down and get them."
Luther nodded.
He told her to bring them straight to the conference room.
He would announce the results momentarily.
