Luther went at it over and over.
Until finally, Hilda fell asleep from sheer exhaustion. Through the haze, she thought she felt him whispering against her ear.
"Hilda, you were the one who fell for me first."
"You were the one who kept tempting me."
She hadn't! But she was too drained to argue.
She vaguely sensed him continuing to kiss her, before eventually getting out of bed to dress. He stepped out to speak with someone, then returned to pull her back into his arms.
By the time she woke up, night had already fallen.
The bedroom was dark. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows taking a phone call. The moonlight spilled over his tall, athletic frame, highlighting his sharp profile and making him look flawlessly striking. A calm, confident smile played on his lips, only amplifying his effortless masculine charm.
He deliberately kept his voice low.
"Yeah, Hilda is asleep."
"She hasn't woken up yet."
"I'll bring her back tomorrow."
"Mhm, I'll take good care of her."
He hung up and turned around.
His gaze met Hilda's.
Hilda was wearing one of his dark gray dress shirts, her dark hair tumbling in messy waves over her shoulders. Her luminous skin was marked with red blushes, giving her a disheveled, raw beauty that instantly stirred something deep within him again.
Luther walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, trailing a hand through her hair. His tone was incredibly gentle. "You're awake. Are you sore?"
Hilda turned her face away. "Where's Annie?"
He reached out and clicked on a wall sconce. "I had Lori take her over to my parents' place this evening. She's doing great, don't worry."
Hilda gave a soft nod.
Luther's eyes lingered on her face. After a moment of hesitation, he asked, "How are you feeling?"
That was a completely rhetorical question.
How could a man not know if a woman felt good? Even if it was his first time with her, Luther was a quick study. After several rounds, he had mastered the rhythm, ensuring not just his own satisfaction, but hers as well.
A faint flush crept onto Hilda's cheeks.
But her mind quickly shifted to something else.
And the color drained from her face.
—Luther hadn't used any protection.
She stared at him for a few seconds, then threw off the covers to get up, only for him to catch her wrist.
"Where are you going?"
Hilda kept her voice low. "You didn't use protection. I'm going to the pharmacy."
Luther didn't even have to think about it. "If you get pregnant, we'll keep the baby."
Hilda just looked at him quietly.
He tried to pry her off.
But she clung to him with all her might, pressing her face against his back and murmuring frantically.
"I was wrong, please don't shut me out, Luther. But how could she be pregnant with your baby? You slept with her, didn't you? I could have given you that! I could have given you children, couldn't I? What did I do wrong? Or do you just have absolutely no desire for me?"
"Luther, I'm going crazy."
"I'm seriously losing my mind."
"You love me, you clearly love me."
Luther didn't turn around.
His gaze remained fixed on the dark night, his voice devoid of emotion. "Jolie, a man can separate physical needs from love very easily. Besides, people don't live for love alone, especially not people in my position. You've always been smart, but what you did this time is unforgivable."
He broke free from her grip and walked toward the lobby doors.
Behind him, Jolie's agonizing screams echoed through the night.
"Luther, I only did it because I love you!"
"I was out of my mind with jealousy!"
"I'm really losing my mind!"
He slowly glanced back over his shoulder.
Jolie's face was entirely soaked with tears.
