Luther went to take a shower first.
When he came back, Hilda was still in the exact same position, clearly upset.
He slid into bed behind her, pressing his body flush against hers. When she didn't react, he gently gripped her slender shoulder, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered, "Are you mad? If it bothers you, I won't take her calls at night anymore. We were just talking about work anyway."
That was the closest thing to a promise Luther had ever made.
Things had been genuinely good between them lately.
Annie was like a sweet little puppy—demanding hugs at dinner, clinging to him like a koala on the ski slopes, and insisting her daddy wait right outside the door while she took a bath. When she finally stepped out, her head covered in white bubbles, it absolutely melted his heart. He had never realized he could love a child this much.
Every night, he lost himself in Hilda's embrace.
Hilda had the lush, captivating allure of a mature woman, completely distinct from the charm of a young girl. Luther had an incredibly high libido, and he simply couldn't get enough of her. Often, she would be begging him to stop long before he was truly satisfied. While Hilda felt his appetite was utterly excessive, Luther thought their chemistry was absolutely perfect. Occasionally, when he hit all the right notes, she would even respond with unbridled passion.
Living a life like this would melt even the coldest of men.
And Luther was no saint.
In truth, he suspected the real reason for his shifting feelings wasn't romantic love or physical lust, but Annie. He wanted to give the kid a proper, stable family. His father had spoken to him about it recently, too. Given how well they had all been getting along, Luther had practically made up his mind. Even though Hilda was giving him the cold shoulder, he still untied the belt of her robe, his voice husky as he whispered intimate pillow talk in her ear—
"Annie will be five after the New Year."
"Hilda, let's have another baby."
"Matilda has been doing well lately. If we're lucky, she might even live to see our second child born... Don't put any pressure on yourself. A boy would be great, but if it's a girl, we'll just see whether she or Annie is better suited to take over Aegis Group in the future."
Hilda stayed silent.
Luther kissed the nape of her neck with total devotion.
Just as he was about to take things further, she stopped him. She rolled over and looked up at him, her voice tinged with a slight rasp. "What are you going to do with Jolie? Make her your mistress?"
Luther frowned instinctively.
"She'll be an executive at Aegis Group."
How could Hilda not understand?
—Jolie would remain right by his side.
Luther checked his watch.
"Take my wife and daughter back to the apartment."
"I need to head to the office."
"Lori already arranged another car for me."
After taking a whole week off, his workload had piled up into a mountain. He was going to be swamped, probably running on fumes right up until New Year's Eve.
Hilda understood completely.
She picked up Annie and was just about to get into the car
when someone stepped out of the back of a black Mercedes van parked across from them.
"Luther."
Hilda looked up and saw Jolie.
