After Luther hung up the phone.

They went at it relentlessly a few more times.

Afterward, Hilda ended up sleeping for six straight hours. By the time she woke up, the sky outside was already dark. A single wall sconce was lit in the bedroom, casting a soft, warm glow that felt strangely beautiful.

She pushed herself up with one hand.

—And stared blankly into space.

Luther walked in from the sitting area, dressed in a crisp white shirt, vest, and tie, his dark hair slicked back. He looked incredibly handsome and aristocratic.

Their eyes met.

"You're awake?"

Luther's voice carried a hint of gravel.

Hilda awkwardly smoothed her hair and gave a soft hum. The man then sat on the edge of the bed, quietly watching her as he said, "I told Mom we aren't going tonight. We'll head over tomorrow morning."

He lifted his wrist to check his watch—

"It's 7:00 PM."

"A little too late to head over for dinner."

Hilda had always been easily embarrassed.

So Luther had already made up the excuse for her.

Even so, Hilda's face burned hot. She said softly, "You should have woken me up earlier."

Luther didn't say anything.

He just gently brushed her cheek.

And gave a soft chuckle.

Neither of them could have known that this would be their final moment of warmth. Even though there was no love between them, it was, at the very least, peaceful.

...

The next day, Luther brought Hilda over for dinner.

That night at the hospital, she had given birth completely alone.

Still reeking of blood, she couldn't wait to see her baby, the only light in her life. Annie was different from her. As long as Annie had a chance to experience a father's love, Hilda would not strip that away from her just because of her own feelings.

Luther's voice was deep and magnetic.

It didn't take long for him to coax the little girl to sleep.

He had originally planned to wait until his daughter was asleep.

To be intimate with Hilda again.

But when he looked up, he saw that Hilda was already fast asleep.

Her cheek rested against the pillow, looking utterly serene, her dark hair fanning out across the white linen. She looked breathtakingly beautiful.

Luther watched her for a long time before lying down. He couldn't resist reaching out to gently hold her hand. With one arm around Annie and his hand holding Hilda's, his heart felt completely full.

Luther didn't realize that this was happiness.

And he was about to let it slip right through his fingers.
