Hilda's face burned so hot it felt like it might catch fire.
She retreated into the walk-in closet to pick out a dark gray dress shirt for him.
By the time she returned to the bedroom, Luther had already gotten out of bed. He wore only a pair of black dress trousers. His upper body was lean and perfectly sculpted, his skin giving off a highly alluring sheen. He stretched out his arms, clearly expecting her to dress him. Hilda silently helped him into the shirt. As she fastened the buttons, her mind drifted. He wrapped his arms around her waist, asking in a low voice, "What are you thinking about?"
Hilda offered a faint smile. "You'll be thirty-one this year."
He didn't reply, simply pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.
He finished buttoning the shirt.
Tall and possessing an exceptional masculine magnetism, even Hilda had to admit that at thirty, Luther was even more captivating than when they had first married. He must face countless temptations in the business world. Had he been staying faithful to Jolie all these years?
Sensing her thoughts, Luther furrowed his brow slightly. "I have no interest in wrestling with strangers in bed."
There was no such thing as 'staying faithful' to anyone.
He simply didn't harbor sexual thoughts about women he didn't know.
Not even Jolie.
Because it wasn't legal, it didn't ignite much of an impulse.
But he didn't bother explaining all that to Hilda.
Just as they were about to head downstairs, the door was pushed open.
A tiny figure ran into the room.
Annie, her dark hair bouncing and wearing an adorable little dress, came bounding in. She threw herself straight into Luther's legs, her sweet voice ringing out, "Grandpa and Grandma told me to come get you for dinner!"
Luther let go of Hilda.
He scooped Annie up in his arms, pinching her soft cheek. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a small, exquisite item. It was a flawlessly smooth, antique white jade pendant. A single glance proved its exorbitant value—radiant and flawless, carved from a material nearly impossible to find in recent years. He fastened it around Annie's neck himself, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "Your New Year's present from Daddy."
Annie touched it, utterly delighted.
She was four years old now.
This was the very first New Year's she was spending with her father.
The three of them headed downstairs.
Hilda, thin-skinned as always, felt slightly embarrassed. Luther, however, looked completely unfazed as he picked up a bottle of premium liquor from the dining table. He glanced at Nathan. "Dad, didn't you quit drinking? You're having this tonight?"
The scent of sulfur in the air only added to the festive atmosphere.
After several rounds of drinks, Luther unfastened the top two buttons of his shirt.
The skin of his neck was flushed with a faint red.
His veins were slightly raised.
—Exuding incredible sexual tension.
Eleanor complained to her husband, "Luther is taking his wife and daughter out in a bit. Why did you make him drink so much?"
Nathan waved it off. "What does it matter when there's a driver? Besides, don't you know your son's tolerance by now?"
Realizing he was right, Eleanor stopped protesting.
Luther had one arm casually draped over the back of Hilda's chair as he discussed business with his father. The scene was indescribably harmonious and relaxed. But a moment later, his phone rang at the worst possible time. Glancing at the caller ID, he saw it was Jolie. He ignored the call, but a message immediately popped up on the screen—
[Luther, Jolie attempted suicide.]
[She's in emergency care at Alpha General Hospital.]
