She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 19

Chapter 19

That evening, when Caleb returned from his business trip and heard the chaotic news, he handed his suit jacket to Martha and knocked on his sister’s bedroom door.

“Lyra, since when did you get so bold?” Caleb laughed. “But honestly, even if you picked Waylon Grayson or Lucas Chavez, you shouldn’t have picked Caspian. He’s just a bookworm…”

“Don’t insult him,” Lyra said, flipping the page of the financial newspaper she was reading. “He’s a million times better than Rowan.”

“You only said that to piss Rowan off, right? Listen, I don’t want you playing the ostrich every time something goes wrong.”

“That’s not it.” Lyra frowned. “Caleb, this isn’t a joke, and it’s definitely not a ploy to make Rowan jealous. I am completely, entirely over him.”

Caleb paused, unsure if he should actually believe her.

“Caleb,” Lyra looked up. “You have to help me with Mom and Dad. I am not marrying Rowan Jameson. Tell them I am absolutely committed to dating Caspian.”

Caleb asked, “Then tell me this, what exactly do you like about Caspian?”

“He’s young, he’s obedient, and he does exactly what I want.”

Caleb fell silent. Expecting Rowan Jameson to be obedient for even a single day of his life was like expecting the sun to rise in the west.

Caspian, on the other hand, was gentle, polite, and certainly much easier to manage. “Alright, you’ve convinced me.”

Lyra beamed. “You’re the best.”

The mention of romance naturally brought her future sister-in-law to mind. “How are things going with Kayla?”

In the past, Caleb had dodged every blind date set up by their parents, but he had finally agreed to meet Kayla Harrington. Lyra knew Kayla was the first and last woman he would ever be set up with, they were destined to get married.

Caleb shrugged nonchalantly. “We’ve only met a few times. She seems like a decent, traditional woman.”

Lyra knew Kayla had fallen for Caleb the moment they met, but right now, Caleb was still holding out hope for Jasmine Ford, leaving him largely indifferent to Kayla.

“A decent woman is exactly what this family needs,” Lyra said pointedly.

“We’re just testing the waters for now,” Caleb nodded, clearly uninterested in discussing his love life any further.

Watching him, Lyra pressed her lips together. She refused to let her future sister-in-law get hurt.

“Jasmine is bad news, Caleb. Kayla is a much better fit for you.”

“What are you talking about? I don’t even have feelings for Jasmine.”

Lyra’s brow furrowed. She had brought up two women, yet he only bothered to defend his stance on Jasmine.

The man she once loved and her own brother were both captivated by Jasmine Ford.

At that moment, her heart ached terribly for both herself and Kayla.

Leaving his sister’s room, Caleb headed straight for Arthur’s study.

“Dad, since Lyra is insisting on Caspian, let’s just drop the Rowan issue. Rowan is an uncontrollable force. He doesn’t care about Lyra, and forcing him to marry her will only end in disaster,” Caleb reasoned.

Arthur understood the logic perfectly.

Upon arriving at the lavish hotel ballroom, Caleb spent some time exchanging pleasantries with the host.

While Caleb was occupied, Lyra scanned the room. In the past, she had hated these stuffy corporate events, finding them incredibly boring. She only ever attended because Rowan was always at them, effortlessly holding his own among the city’s oldest billionaires.

Thankfully, Rowan was nowhere to be seen tonight.

Just as she was about to look away, she spotted a highly energetic man in his fifties laughing and chatting up a storm.

She recognized him instantly.

It was Jonathan Ford, Jasmine’s father.

He was swirling a glass of champagne, enthusiastically networking with a man Lyra immediately identified as the CEO of a massive tech conglomerate.

Normally, Jonathan Ford wouldn’t even be allowed in the same room as a titan of that caliber, let

alone secure a one-on-one conversation.

But someone was pulling the strings, introducing him to the city’s elite.

And that someone was Wesley Wade, Rowan Jameson’s chief secretary.

At that moment, the host finished speaking with Caleb, excused himself, and walked directly toward Jonathan Ford’s circle.

Lyra tugged hard on Caleb’s sleeve. “Look… over there. That’s Jonathan Ford.”
